As-salaamu alaikum,
I recently reverted to Islam and would like to change my last name. How do I choose a name for myself? Jazak-Allah khair.

My first name, Hannah, is already an "Islamic" name.

John, if you read this- it is completely out of the question for me to commit my life to Christ, because as a Muslim, God takes the number one place in my life, and no person- not even His beloved prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) can take His place. I had given this a lot of thought as a Christian, as an agnostic, and in my embracement of Islam. May God bless you and guide you.

Wa alaikum Salaam,

You don't have to change your last names...it is best to keep the name of your family...however if you have personal reasons to change your last name you may...you may use a name from one of the prophets or you may adopt a name from a close friend with her permission of course...the best thing is to get a name that really reflects you

insha allah you will find peace of mind with Islam and you will experience some hard times whith your non muslim family and friends but instead of giving up just turn to Allah and not every muslim has the right answer they find it hard to separate cultural traditions from Islam in those times turn to the quran and the Sunnah

Wa alaikum Salaam

we alikum salam
welcome to our great religion of love peace & happiness
you don't have to change your last name because islam asked us to respect our parents & to keep good relations with our family friends & heritage
our prophet mohamed didn't change his name or names of his friends
remember that...
names don't make people .... people make names

Alaikum Assalam sis,
Don't change your last name. In the Quran it says specifically to keep the names of our fathers - in our case here in the West that refers to our last names unless you have your father's name as your last name? So anyway, keep your last name. It identifies you!!!

wa aleikom al salaam..

i would also recommend going through a website and picking a name with a nice meaning...
not all muslims have last names that can be referred to as "muslim".. but if it makes you feel better then it would be nice too :)
goodluck and wish you all the best :)
