If it's a misdemeanor, then, by definition, the maximum sentence would be 365 days in the County jail. If it's a felony you'd have to check the penal code to see what the maximum sentence is based on the exact charge in the criminal complaint. (There are sometimes many different sections that deal with a charge like this.) Also, the charge contained in the conviction may be different than the one initially charged.
In CA, the DA must charge the specific counts, including enhancements, then show the possible sentence.. usually on the last page of the criminal complaint. You'll see a number like... 2-3-5... meaning 3 years is the mid-term, and any circumstances in aggravation or mitigation would sway the actual sentence toward the 5 year mark or the 2 year mark... a 16-2-3 offense means sixteen months to a max of 3 years...
