All dogs shed some. You can't stop some breeds from shedding, no matter what you do. Dogs like Huskies, Shelties, Poms, all shed because they are double coated. Dalmations, labs, and short haired dogs shed their coat regularly and frequently year round.

What you can do to help minimize this is to

Feed the dog a ultra high quality diet. Foods like Evo, Candidae, Natural Balance (not nutro, natural recipe, etc), etc give the dog better nutrition which has been shown to decrease some problem shedding.

Brush the dog regularly. No matter the hair length, brushing daily can help remove some of the dead hair before it drops. It also keeps the other hair conditioned so that it's less likely to fall out.

Keep the dog inside. If the dog doesn't grow a winter coat, it won't shed as much.

Bathe your dog as needed, but don't over bathe him. Overbathing can cause more hair to fall out as it dries the hair out. Unless your dog is particularly smelly or rolls in something, spot cleaning should be fine and full bathing once a month or 3-4 weeks.

There are several different schools of thought on shaving dogs. Some believe that it can help reduce shedding because the dog won't feel as hot. They also feel that it can help them cool down better. However, others feel that you leave the dog vulnerable. The hair can help protect them from the sun and from the heat penetrating to the skin and their core. Some people feel that shaving may actually increase heat issues and possibly shedding issues.

But remember, no matter how good of food and how much grooming you do, some breeds will just always shed. Get a good vacuum to make clean-up easier.

There is no way to "prevent" or "stop" a dog from shedding. However you can use a "Zoom Groom" rubber brush (bought from any local pet store) on them. The loose hairs stick to the rubber and are pulled loose. I recommend using it on some linolium, as it can make quite a pile of fur.

If you don't want to do the work yourself, a local grooming parlor may offer a service to de-shed your dog. My company calls it a "Shed-x" where we use specifically formulated shampoos in the bath that loosen up the hair so when we brush it for the hour afterwards, all the loose hair comes out. Good Luck.

You cannot STOP a dog from shedding if its a shedding dog. It's going to happen, whether you like it or not. But regular grooming, especially brushing, will lessen the amount of hair that gets left on your clothes and furniture.
