It's pretty much always a good idea to use a condom, especially since you can never be totally sure of other person's sexual background. However, Herpes is one of several STD's where even wearing a condom may or may not prevent spreading. The reason is that the disease is spread from direct skin to skin contact, and not through fluids like some of the other STD's. So, any part of the skin not covered may be susceptible to the herpes virus. Furthermore, this is one of several viral STD's for which many people do not show symptoms, and are simply carriers. This is true for Type I (generally oral) and Type II (generally genital). As a matter of fact, there is a pretty large segment of the population that carry the herpes virus and don't know it (especially type I). Not showing symptoms does not mean that you can not spread it. However, if the symptoms are present you are much more likely to spread it. Finally, it's possible that you could have Herpes only orally, only genitally, or in both locations. So, just because you have a cold sore doesn't necessarily mean you have herpes genitally or vise versa. My advice to you would be not to worry about the oral variety too much, unless you are having an outbreak. In that case, then just don't kiss anyone or perform oral sex on them until it clears. But as for the condom, I'd suggest using it if there's any doubt at all. The good news is that herpes is more of a nuisance than anything. At the end of the day, it won't kill you. I hope this helps...

Cold sores are about the same thing as herpes, and millions of people say there "IS NO CURE". I have news for those people, there is a cure. When you get a cold sore in your mouth you can try what works for me.
Put salt water on them daily. Should vanish within about 3 days.
Or
You can use hydrogen peroxide.
Some light reading would include: "Never An Outbreak" by William Fharel
For genital herpes though, I recommend the hydrogen peroxide even when people tell you "IT'S NOT A CURE" or something to that effect.

definite. It does no longer ought to characterize which you have genital herpes nevertheless. Herpes is amazingly contagious, you will desire to no longer proportion a straw with others while you have a chilly sore, and make helpful to no longer touch it. there is no longer a treatment for it, yet you may attempt utilising camphophanique (spelling?) its in a eco-friendly bottle approximately one as quickly as and has campher in it. That works super. Herpes is often contagious whether you dont have an epidemic, even nevertheless it helps to be greater advantageous careful while you have a chilly sore/

No you don't need to worry about using a condem if you have a mouth cold sore (different TYPES of the herpies virus) BUT just in case you might be careful when infected in giving oral sex. Millions of people, including those who have NOT even HAD sex get cold sores (from other people who had cold sores) and herpies of the genitalia spreads pretty much the same way (close contact with infected area... keep in mind just like the genital herpies commercials says... you can contract AND spread herpies even with no outbreaks or symptoms, I do NOT think that is true of cold sores, I think you can only spread those when the person has an outbreak).

I am absolutely terrified and I feel so alone. I just found out last week that I tested positive for hsv1 and 2. I have been with the same man for the past 10 years and within the last year found out that he has cheated on me with numerous women. I am so scared that I can give it to my children by kissing them and them eating with me...I feel like my whole life has changed. And even though the nurses, my doctor, and websites say that a lot of people have it I still feel like I am by myself. My self esteem has dropped and I feel like I have been used up. But now, My life is very happy.

Herpes simplex I usually infects the mouth and Herpes simplex II usually infects the genital area. You can get type II on your lips and vice versa. It is important to not let the infected area (lips) touch another person's lips or genitalia while you have a breakout. As far as wearing a condom - always unless you are trying to conceive!

It's 2 different viruses.
HSV1 (Herpes Simplex 1) is the usual virus in cold sores.
HSV2 (Herpes Simplex 2) is the usual cause of genital sores.
HSV1 usually doesn't transmit to the genitals.
Oral sex can transmit HSV2 from the genitals of one person to the
mouth of another.
Herpes or not, you should always wear a condom. As ugly as it is, herpes doesn't kill. AIDS does.
Be safe!

I went to webmd.com
"Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV). HSV-1 usually leads to lip and mouth sores (herpes labialis), while HSV-2 most often leads to genital herpes. However, both virus types can cause cold sores or genital herpes if skin comes into contact with either type."
