He is 21 months old, and normally his dad is home all day with him. Today,i stayed home so my hubby could go to a Dr.s appointment. He asked me for juice, but I decided it was time for milk. He saw he got milk and started throwing a fit. I just realized he always asks for juice. The last time I gave him milk, he cried then too.

It's the sweet taste the juice offers. Start diluting the juice with water ( half/half ). Then maybe 3/4 water and 1/4 juice. With the sugar loss, hopefully his taste will start to change. Does he get enough dairy from other sources? Yogurts, cheeses, sugar free puddings, cottage cheese, sour cream, butter, etc. Whatever you can get him to eat to replace the lost nutrients from the milk he's refusing to drink

The juice is sweet.

We limit the juice our kids have because if they get juice they won't drink milk or water. So our two get one 4 oz glass of juice each day but we do a lot of fresh fruit.

This way they both get the amount of milk they need. It has also improved trips to the dentist. Since we've limited the juice... No cavities!!!

It is the sweetness, kids that age are not suppose to have more then 8 ozs of juice in a day! Per WIC and my DOCTOR! My daughter? LOVES juice she gets her daily 8 ozs in 32 ozs because she gets 1/4 cup of juice with 3/4 cups of water because straight juice and too much at ONE TIME gives her the "runs" or an AWFUL diaper rash (still fighting for her to potty train).

My advice, you are MOM you say MILK time and that is MILK time! Or he gets just water.

No more then 8 ozs (one CUP) per day!

Juice is like candy, it's mostly sugar and very little (or no) nutrients. If he refuses milk, let him drink water. He shouldn't have more than 4 ounces or juice a day, you can dilute that to make 8 ounces, that'd be better for his teeth.

Like everyone else, I would say the sweetness of the juice. Get fortified juice with the least amount of sugar you can find. An interesting point was found a while back- when kids consume sugar, it makes them produce endorphins, which makes them feel good. Make sure you brush his teeth too.

The simplest answer would be that he doesn't like milk and he likes juice. I feel you should be considerate of his likes but you are the parent and you are supposed to know what's better for him. Don't let him be the parent and make you do what he wants. Stand firm and never back down.

He prefers the sweetness of juice over the blandness of milk. If he is to the point of having very low calcium, try asking your doctor for ideas. You could try vanilla flavored soy milk, because it is also sweet; or try chocolate milk-ask a doctor first, lol. I am not a pediatrician, so don't whatever.

Don't worry, he is old enough for juice and starting soft foods. He can have milk if he wants it. Don't add sugar to juice, or give juice with added sugar.
