I asked someone which breed of dog is the smartest and said actually mixed breed dogs were the most intelligent. He said mutts. Is the same true for humans? Are mixed race people actually smarter. I can see how they would have a lower incidence of inbreeding. But more intelligent?

I have to agree with summerruby

and to dodge - intelligence has NOTHING to do with the parenting. it has to do with a given individuals intelligence. I have known some very intelligent people who's parents could qualify as morons.

nor does it have to do with education. a person can be well educated, and still be dumb as a fence post.

Depends on which philosopher you're talking with...some say intelligence comes from education (at home and school and in life) and others say intelligence, at least in part, comes from heredity. I would think too that intelligence can be lowered by drugs. And, I did a study in college on "noise", and "noise" can bring down children to a point of being a slow learner. Then again, some people are considered intelligent for no reason, for instance a child prodigy or a child pianist or artist. So I don't think mixing races has anything to do with it.

I have 4 brothers and 1 sister that are mixed, 2 of my brothers are exceptionally smart. The others are average. In my opinion it's just the luck of the draw for whole or mixed races. I'm sure mixed race people would like to think that they have something special as being smarter, but I doubt if race has anything to do with it.

well, i am mixed blk/wht...and as for being smarter...i don't know about that ...i was average in grades and did what most people do in life...as far as having an edge... in culture and society...I may have to say yes,,,just a bit because as far as diversity in race goes, I had to deal with it pretty much all my life....I had to learn the history on the two sides of my culture... I have often face racism on the fact that I was part black...and had to learn how to deal with that in a physiological way. But I don't think it puts me smarter than any other race...As far as the interbreeding goes...I believe that has something to do with genes.. to much of one is not a good thing,,,affecting most parts of the body and not only the brain... Anyone could master something if they put the mind into it...some just take a little longer....but the two of them learn the same thing.....

People who come from a diverse gene pool have a greater potential to be more intelligent than those who come from a non-diverse gene pool. But is mixing ethnicities the same thing as increasing genetic diversity?

There seems to be an unspoken assumption among people today that members of the same ethnic group must be more genetically similar to each other than they would be to someone of a different ethnicity. But we don't really know if this is true. There have been interesting studies about genetics in recent years, but for now, how genetically similar we are to members of our own ethnic group (and how similar we are to people of *other* ethnic groups) remains unknown.

Genetic diversity can increase the chances of producing more intelligent offspring. But it remains to be seen whether or not ethnic diversity can be used as a proxy for genetic diversity.

For example, if you assume Sally from ethnic group A comes from a gene pool that's quite separate and distinct compared to Joe from ethnic group B, then yes, it's possible that when Sally and Joe have kids, the possibility that their children will be intelligent increases.

Similarly, two people (say, Mary and Bob) who belong to the same ethnic group, but who come from two diverse and distinct gene pools, *also* have a greater likelihood of giving birth to more intelligent children.

Both mixed-ethnicity couple Sally and Joe and same-ethnicity couple Mary and Bob will have a greater likelihood of having more intelligent children, compared to parents who both come from the same non-diverse gene pool.

In other words, what we know for now is that genetic diversity -- which is not necessarily the same thing as ethnic diversity -- is what increases the chances of producing intelligent offspring.

Generally speaking, mixed race people get the strongest and healthiest genes from both sides. How smart we are depends on our parents because there is so much individual variation in populations, but some degree of improvement would not be surprising.

Well, Asians are actually the result of interbreeding between Aliens and humans milleniums ago(that's why Asians are so good at math and are so starkingly different than other cultures).

I'm not sure, but you may be confusing RACE with BREED.
There are different colors within a breed, right?
