I'd say it totally depends on what kind of person you are.
I think there could be roughly 3 kind of people, one who just be on their way, doesn't complains about anything at all and just try to live their life in anyway ever if they have to follow others. In my experience most of the people are like that. If you are talking about such people then they will go where the flow will draw them to.
Secondly, there are kinds of people who try to draw the civilization ahead, and take it further. And they do only the right things other then mistakes and they would never do anything unless they are completely sure that it is the right thing to do and usually they set the example that other people usually follows.
And thirdly, there are people who are much like the second category. But they draw the civilization backwards. These kinds of people don't care if something is right or not they would just do it for their benefit or for business purpose; but also these kind of people posses the ability to motivate others people.
The last two kind of people usually makes their own way and for them it would be the way they want it to be. Let me know your opinion about my opinion.

Because not enough of G. Dead fans voted in the 2000 election. They didn't think it was important. Now some of them really ARE dead- because they joined the Service under the guy they DIDN'T vote for... & they ended up in Iraq. I have a feeling- they aren't so "grateful" -anymore... :)
