Good cholesterol (HDL) is raised by regular, moderate intensity exercise and regular, moderate ingestion of alcohol. Diet cannot raise your good cholesterol.

1. Consume more "good" fats, like those in nuts, flaxseed, cold-water fish (salmon, tuna, herring, etc). Canned tuna is safer than fresh, and wild-caught salmon is safer than farm-raised. Use salad dressings made with olive oil. Olive oil is great for frying, too, instead of solid shortenings or even some liquid ones.

2. Exercise briskly at least 3-4 times a week. Aerobic exercise and work up a sweat.

3. Have a small glass of RED wine daily, or take resveratrol as a supplement .

So far as I know (I have low HDL) there is not yet a medication you can take to increase HDL. Low HDL can be as bad for you as high LDL. And more important than the level of LDL is the particle size. This can be tested along with your other cholesterol factors.

Diet CAN raise your cholesterol and myself along with my DR and many others who use flaxseed and exercise and eat right have lowered our cholesterol greatly!! Flax seed, kashi cereals, fruit, veggies, staying away from bad fats like hydrogenated soybean oils, processed or boxed foods, and "excercise". Sometimes diet and excercise do not work alone due to genetics and a DR will have to prescribe a statin.
