Years ago, I read the following (I think I'm paraphrasing), "There is no greater test of the character of a man than the manner in which he behaves toward fools." I would really like to verify the actual wording and the author. Anybody know?

I did try a search on Bartlett's, but came up with nothing.

"You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing to him or for him.", is the closest I could recall. Unfortunately the author is unknown.

I tried to find that quote, to no avail- it may be worded differently. Here are a few that I did find at http://www.thinkexist.com

"Fool me once, shame on you- fool me twice...that would make TWO times!"

“Never argue with a fool. Someone watching may not be able to tell the difference.”

“A wise man gets more use from his enemies than a fool from his friends.”

“If one does not understand a person, one tends to regard him as a fool.”

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than open one's mouth and remove all doubt.”

“A wise man can see more from the bottom of a well than a fool can from a mountain top.”

“Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain but it takes character and self control to be understanding and forgiving.”

“You may fool all the people some of the time, you can even fool some of the people all of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all the time.”
