I don't think it's cat as in 'feline'. I think it's cat as in 'catfish.' Catfish don't have obvious scales like perch and bass. They're smooth like they have skin. And it's hard to get that skin to come off. My dad sometimes used the pliers to pull the skin off when he was getting the catfish he'd caught ready for frying.
