The correct answer is NOT six weeks. People are completely irresponsible and give them away as soon as possible, and it is now thought that those are the correct times.
A breeder would never give them away before 12 weeks, and even then makes sure that they are mature enough to go to their new home. 10 weeks absolutely earliest is what is advised by my vet. Even after they are weaned (around 6-7 weeks) they NEED the extra time to be socialized. The mother cat teaches them how to be good house cats, how to use their litter box, how to behave, and how to get along well with other people/cats/animals. Take them away too early and they face potential behavioral problems in the future, among other things.
And, of course, encourage your friend to spay to her cat -- there is no reason for a non-breeder to be fostering kittens, it contributes to thousands of cats being euthanized every year because there are just not enough homes for them (ie, what if the future owners of -those- kittens don't spay and neuter -them-? the cycle goes on and on). And I will assume that she is screening each person who gets these kittens, so that they get adequate care and love and won't end up like the millions of cats in shelters.
Good luck to her!

10-12 weeks. The mother cat has to socialize the kittens, teaching them how to groom themselves and use the litter box and trust humans. It's really not the best to remove kittens from their mom and littermates before at least 10 weeks.

They can be weaned around 6 - 7 weeks of age, however in most states it is illegal to buy, sell, adopt or give away a kitten or puppy before it has completed it's 7th week and in some states it is illegal before 8 weeks.

handling kittens would not reason the mummy to desert them - its a fantasy. yet letting her exterior is the incorrect factor to do - cats can breed interior days or even weeks of having a clutter if allowed. do not enable her exterior back without being spayed. in case you will not be able to maintain her interior and look after the toddlers, then turn her right into a safeguard and supply the kittens on your pal that's time-honored with of a thank you to bottle feed, and so on.

A kitten should remain with the mother for the first eight weeks of their lives or at the very least seven weeks.

My cat had kittens not to long ago. We gave them about 7 weeks in tell we would let them roam around.

Usually for 6 weeks. But I think 7 is better. When they have stopped nursing and have been eating solid food for about a week.
