People who believe in religions do so mostly for emotional reasons or because they were brought up to believe it. Therefore, they fear any other stories that challenge those beliefs. Even though the Davinci Code is a fictional story, it threatens Christians because, deep down, they know how flimsy their own story is. The very people who are gullible enough to buy into Christianity are likely to be swayed by stories like the DaVinci Code unless drastic actions are taken to discredit it.

You'll note that it's mainly the people who don't believe in Christianity and think that Dan reveals the secrets of the true, alternate Christianities are the real DVC believers. They're the ones booking DVC Tours to Europe to see the "truth" for themselves.

The reason for this wacky phenomenon is because Dan Brown told everyone that the art history and church history in his book was absolutely true, that he only made up the thriller part between Langdon, Sophie and Teabing to tie it all together. In a preface of the book it says that all of the art history depicted within is true, which is itself a crock, then he went on to say that he was depicting Opus Dei correctly, and that he had tied together the secret of the Grail from his research and was just writing a thriller around what he learned.

Then, as people began to look harder at what he tied together, they found it to be so much rubbish. It was at that point that he threw up his hands and said, "Hey, it's just a novel, folks!" Great, but he didn't mind the buzz when it was selling his books, so why tell the truth about it up front, you know?

Actually, the concept was really interesting. Even as a Christian, I love a good story about secret knowledge and earth-shattering revelations. Problem is the novel itself is a wooden, mediocre yawner of a thriller, with the concept holding up what would otherwise be almost unpublishable. It's a good thing he had the buzz machine going, or he might be trying to find another publisher for his next book.

It's too bad for another reason too, that Angels & Demons was quite entertaining and well executed in comparison.

The fact that this novel was derived from non-fiction is what happens to confuse everyone. So it has been taken seriously mainly because it has retarded people not knowing fact from fiction. Christians are outraged, not all of them though, at the publishing of the book because now they have to do more work in their communities to set what is truth and what isn't. Evangelism is a never ending work for us, but when things like this come out, then it's even more difficult to do our purpose. Why couldn't we have more "Passion of the Christ"-type films? And you know what makes me really angry? In India, they are going to have a film about Mother Teressa played by Paris Hilton or some slut who I can't remember.

Well it takes a bit of truth and twists it around, and some people believe it. It twists around a belief system, which is never going to go well, remember Salmon Rushdie? No oone asked why anyone would take his book seriously, and I deeply admire the man's writing, it is a real read for those who want to read something of substance, instead of pop fluff from the likes of Dan Brown, it is worth picking up The Satanic Verses. But why is it that as soon as Christians try to defend their beliefs everyone says they are over reacting and close minded?

I agree totally that it is fiction. I have read it and found it interesting reading but no more so than Dean Koontz and I do not believe his to be true. But unfortunately there are some young in the faith or not able to understand things that are taking this as truth and that is were the problem lies. Dan Brown is himself a Christian.

I think there is a VERY large debate about the validity of the modern church and also whether or not Jesus had children.

Some people find the very idea of Jesus having sex blasphemous while others say they don't believe it because its not in the Bible.

It puts to question A LOT about the reality of this VERY POWERFUL religion.

There are a lot of people out there wearing blinders with no sense of humor or imagination. I just started re-reading the book, and I'm finding it a bit dumb. What grade level was it written at? 6th?

People who consciously reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour like "The DaVinci Code" because they fancy Jesus as just another sinful man with girlfriends and wives. They reject the divinity of Jesus Christ and His sin-free, perfect life.

Because many of the things mentioned in the book are facts. The story was woven around many factual events and articles.
