If someone tells me that they need help, even a complete stranger, I will always try to come to their rescue. I am a social worker by occupation, do you thing that has anything to do with it?

Yes your work has everything to do with it. You are a good heart and compassionnate person. Being overly concerned might lead some people to abuse your goodness. Some people complain about everything and take advantage of good hearted persons like you. However you are doing the right thing and it is very generous of you. Please do not forget yourself in all of this. There is nothing wrong in loving yourself enough to limit the energies you are putting into your occupation.
May you be surrounded with love and understanding. The world needs more people like you.
