Start with your parents and work backwards. You can look at some of the records on www.ancestry.co.uk for free.
but your parents would give you a good start with births, names etc, then you can look at ancestry to go back further.
I have been doing a box for my great-niece, I have only managed to go back to my great great grand parents though. So far that is.

You have to pay to view entries (you can search for free), but it's not much and you get a copy of the entry online (you have to send off for copies of actual certificates)
