Get a physical hobby, something that makes you move, makes you sweat. Do this hobby, or some form of exercise, regularly.

Try to eat regularly (don't skip meals, or snack constantly, or both), and eat healthy.

Get enough sleep.

Be sure to spend time with family and friends, and absolutely FORGET your job when you're not there. (Telling humorous "war stories" doesn't count)

When you're on the job, stay within Policy, so you don't have to worry about getting in trouble. Treat the inmates fairly, firmly, and consistently, and treat fellow staff members as if your life might depend on them someday.

Religion can be a help, faith is great as a relief from stress.

Get as much additional training as you can, being prepared makes you less stressed.

Stay sharp, my friend!

I spent 2 years in prison for involuntary manslaughter. (was drunk and killed someone in an auto accident) Prison is nothing like you see in the movies. The guards never beat any inmate up (video cameras everywhere and not wanting to lose a good paying job) and it was rare that an inmate would attack another inmate. Inmates are separated in modern penitentiaries: Child molesters live in their own block because they are hated, trouble inmates are kept in isolation. Isolation is feared and most inmates keep peaceful or know they will end up their. What sucked was TV time. There was a 60" large screen TV and everyone had to agree what football/basketball or baseball game to watch. And there was no metal shop or wood shop like you see in movies where an inmate has an opportunity to make a shank.

Stop listening to every one if you have to ask this question then you are a step above most prison guards. I you treat everyone with the respect that you would want to be treated and as humans they will treat you the same. Just follow your rules to a tee and don't wavier .You will earn respect for your beliefs. Try looking at the people you guard as someone that made a mistake and given a chance will do right. For if you treat a person like dirt he'll be just that. I know from experience if it weren't for a few good guards I would have spent my life locked up. The majority of the people are just miss guided in their moral beliefs. You'll know the real bad apples let the hard core guards fail with them. Then leave your work at work enjoy your life at home.

Try to leave the job at the job. Take a regular vacation as often as you can, even if it is just a long three day weekend. Dont let the stress bleed over into your personal/home life. Join a gym or get a counselor.
Try getting trained in different aspects of the prison so that you can move around and avoid burn out.

Try not to be influenced by the backstab staff to take frustrations out on the inmates and they will respect and obey you when they notice you are different and above the rest. like children they look for the simplest of humanity and often fight with one another to get it. watch with caution the slick and clever inmates, they will con you when they get a chance to upgrade their conditions at your expense.
