Ask the vet! My guess is that it's much the same as in humans though.

I had a dog with epilepsy, I don't know what causes it but I was told 1 in 10 dogs had it. she was frightened at age 2 but had got used to it by about 6 and with medication the fits gradually got less frequent. The vet said that because of the epilepsy she would not live past 11 years... she lived to 18!

It most often happened at home when she was quiet, but after an 'exciting' day.

Epilepsy is caused by abnormal brain chemistry. A good way to think of a seizure is an electrical storm in the brain. Everything is happening at once. Sometimes it is triggered by low blood sugar, brain tumors, brain injuries & sometimes doctors have no idea why it occurs, even after extensive testing.

Sometimes it can be controled by drugs, sometimes not. Uncontrolled, continuous seizures can cause brain damage.

Some breeds of dogs are prone to epilepsy. I know that I have to watch my beagles as they grow older because it becomes prevalent when they are between 2-5 years old.

I had a dog with epilepsy. Her attacks were brought on by diet. It is probably not the same for all dogs but I would definatley look into it.

Its the same thing that causes it in humans, abnormal brain function.
