I very much doubt that the voters were religious, I remember there were thousands of complaints from church groups abouit the video's depiction of a Black Christ
Even though this is closer to the truth than the caucasion christ depicted in most literature, due to the far stronger african mix in the genepool of peoples in that area at that time in history. (Saracens are generally depicted as dark skinned and lived in that area as late as the last millenium)

As I recall, the Catholic Church got their knickers in a twist when that video first came out. For some peculiar reason, they didn't like the idea of Madonna grinding her pelvis against what appeared to be intended as a statue of a saint.
Personally, I would have objected to Madonna grinding her pelvis against ANYthing in a public place.
