you would generally be expected to take four AS levels in the first year of study, and then take 3 A Levels in the second, if you were to attend a British school.
If you went to a British college, which is for 16-18 year olds (usually, some also offer adult learning), then you may be able to take fewer A Levels, or combine them with other, less academic (but no less worthwhile) courses, for example in childcare, health and beauty, construction and so on.

A Levels involve studying a subject at greater depth than GCSEs, so yes, lots more hard work is required.

A-level what? All A-levels involve modular exams and many involve coursework (which counts as a module). I did law A-level with OCR though and that was free of coursework.
