It depends on your intent and the man in question. If he did something totally uncalled for and then I call him to task on it...and it hurts his feelings..."Oh, well." But if I did not mean to hurt his feelings, then I would say so...explain what I did mean...and discuss it with him. This could lead to better communication. We often "open mouth, insert foot" without meaning to...it happens. It would also help to reveal his character...does he hold permanent grudges, or can he "let bygones be bygones"?

Apologize as quickly as possible. If you don't, the wound you have inflicted on him will fester and his dislike and mistrust of you will get much worse. Having said that, don't expect him to trust you at the same level as he once did.
