D.R. Horton was our home builder-got my 2400 square foot house built back in 2003 and i love it!! no major problems with it at all. we visited our lot frequently during the construction and always found things to be in order.... we live in the rio salado housing community off of queen creek road and I-10 in the city of maricopa. it's a nice quiet developement and i really like the area.

they have a good review (formerly called continental homes) and the staff was wonderful!!!

other places we thought about were trend homes, meritage and kb...

It is possible your builder used a new old-stock unit on your house. You can check the date of manufacture yourself to be sure. The Goodman outdoor unit has a manufacturers data plate on it. This plate has a serial number on it. The first two digits of the serial number are the year of manufacture. The second two digits are the month. Holes in the condenser coils are not usually covered under warranty since they are most likely the result of impact (mower hit a rock, etc) and not manufacturer defect. It isn't uncommon for on-call A/C guys to want to replace entire units but we (facilities maintenance) routinely repair holes in copper tubing, holes in condensors and rusted out filter/dryers. If it's copper it can be welded and repaired. $3500 is somewhat high to have an outdoor unit replaced. Consider that you can buy a 14 seer Goodman outdoor unit for less than $1500 new and installation takes about an hour. You shouldn't need new lines or a new air handler since your system isn't that old. Call around and find someone to repair the hole. Have them replace the filter/dryer at the same time they repair the hole. They will need to vacuum the system down to confirm there are no leaks. Have them leave the system vacuumed down for several hours to confirm the leak is repaired (maybe over lunch) and to remove any moisture that might have gotten into the compressor oil. We leave the vacuum pump running over night on our systems to boil out any moisture and air that might have gotten into the compressor oil. Your system will need a new charge of refrigerant (4 or 5 pounds depending on line length). The repair may run $350 to $500. Good luck.

Fulton Homes is good I think. My dad knows Doug Fulton...he even got a chance to use his house in California while he was there! I can't believe that someone else on Yahoo! actually said that they are from Arizona! I didn't think that ANYONE else on Yahoo! (except for the people that I know) are from here! Where are you from in Arizona?

Here is a website where actual customers rate the services of all kinds of contractors including homebuilders:

You should be able to get a lot of information about local builders that will help you make a decision.

Good luck with your search for information.

I own a custom home in Phoenix, so I can't be too much help, but we looked around a lot and I remember I was impressed with Meritage homes.

Good luck and God bless.
