I bought 5 pounds of hamburger the other day. I was going to divide it into 5 1 pound packages, but b/c it was so hot, I went ahead and put it in the freezer until I got the rest of the groceries put up. Unfortunately, I forgot about it, and it froze. Can I cook all the hamburger and then refreeze it? I know that I can't thaw it out and then refreeze it. I've heard of cooking it and then freezing it, but I want to make sure that I don't lose all the hamburger by doing that. If anyone has any other suggestions, those are welcome, too. Thanks!

You have a couple of options.

1. Cook all the hamburger (I like to add a little onion and garlic to mind) then put in separate ziploc bags and freeze, this is good for things like spaghetti, chili, casseroles, tacos, etc.
2. Unwarp the meat, microwave a minute at a time. Scrape off the thawed portions of the meat. Repeat until you have the amount of meat you need, then refreeze the rest.

What I would do is unfreeze the lot, make your hamburgers and precook them then freeze the burgers in pairs or more as required. It's ok to refreeze once you've cooked them.

You can thaw enough to divide and refreeze. It may not be ideal but I do it all the time. Just don't completely defrost it, it can still be semi-frozen and be divided. I would say that that is the best way!

cook then freeze the cooked meals
2 pounds could be 8 cooked hamburgers
then 1 pound seasoned and cooked for spaghetti sauce
then 1 pound seasoned and cooked for tacos
then 1 pound mixed and cooked for a meatloaf

Easiest way is to use a new hack saw blade and gut the five pounds into smaller portions, then rebag and put back in freezer!

I would make a big batch of chili and then freeze into either family size portions and maybe some single size servings.
Ready made meals.

If you have a good saw you might be able to cut it frozen. (I have seen my dad use his Table saw on frozen meat many times.) Is a little dangerous (as the meat could be slippery)
