Most christians are only christian because they were raised that way. Most atheists are atheists because they actually question the religion they were born into and study the religion and look for God. When they don't find God, they confirm their belief that God does not exist. When they ask questions about religion and find answers that avoid the question they stop believing. For example..
The devils greatest lie is making you think he doesn't exist. Well, how come it's not God's greatest truth is making you KNOW he exists?
Why wont God show himself to us? Because only a few people are allowed in Heaven, and he only wants true devots who follow blindly, because those who follow blindly are the ones who have true faith in God.
Why aren't their any miracles today? Just look at your body, your entire system is a complex organism that is a miracle everyday. Look at the birds in the sky, and the fish in the water, and the sun rise and set...
The answers I have recieved just... Don't satisfy me. The answers seem ignorant. The only answer that will satisfy me into believing in God is to see God, and I don't want to see him when it's too late and I'm burning in Hell. Why is that jerk waiting for us to deserve Hell before he shows us that we were wrong our entire lives?
I'm sorry, but I believe when people "find God" it's really just psychological more than anything else. Yes it is spiritual, but who's to say that the spirit belongs to God, and that the spirit can't just belong to self? God hasn't told me that. Neither has Jesus.

Your question is innacurate.
Atheists are not the only ones who have read the whole Bible.
So I'm not sure if you are asking why Christians don't read the Bible more, or why atheists bother to read it at all.
Why don't Christians read the bible more? I guess you would have to find ones who don't read it, and ask them. As a Christian, I certainly have read the Bible all the way through, more than once, and recommend it to all believers. But I also confess that I should read it more than I do.
Why do atheists bother to read the Bible at all? I can't speak for them, but I can guess:
1) It is an important book, even to a non-believer. It has greatly influenced Western culture and literature. For example, a lot of the phrases in Shakespeare are from the Bible.
2) Many atheists are sincere, well-meaning people who looking for something in life. They pick up the Bible just in case they might find something useful in it.

because the more you read this book, the more you notice the contradictions. Then you go looking for answers, every christian religion will give you a different answer. So next you start your own research and find out that the people who wrote this book knew nothing about this person other than a collection of fables and stories that were passed down for hundreds of years. So this roman dude (Constantine) chose which ones he liked best and made that the official book. So even if you do believe you are not getting what was really taught in the lessons, it was made to fit Romes idea of life.Don't forget the Romans were who killed your prophet so what did they know? Most of the stories are mirror image to the stories of pagan gods to begain with. The more research a person does, the deeper he goes, the farther back into the ancient times he looks, the more he realizes that this book is just a book of morals and a guideline to life for ancient people. I have read it cover to cover, I have taught in christian schools, I am also an ordained minister. I want the TRUTH about my creator, so I look elsewhere.

They're trying to find a bajillion things to make a mockery out of. So that when they're arguing with true Christians and whatnot, they want to think that they know everything about our religion. Pshaw. I don't see why they're wasting their time. Most of the atheists I've met (not saying they all are) are arrogant jerks who think their opinions are superior to others. Just like, get a life. You aren't going to force me to believe that God doesn't exist. A lot of times when people argue on and on to no end about a certain thing, they end up trying to convince THEMSELVES that what they're saying is the truth.
Edit**
I have been trying to read the bible the whole way through. A family friend gave me the NIV study Bible when I was like 8. Most Chrisitans these days (the ones who CLAIM they are Chrisitan anyways) definately don't act the part. They'll say they're a Christian and do a whole bunch of things that the bible is totally against when they know it's wrong. Hypocrites. I have no respect for them whatsoever. I'm fine with Non-Chrisitans, but if you're going to say you're a Chrisitan, you best act the part.

As a christian sliding into atheism, I imagine that the intense reading and research is done in order to seek the real truth about God and Jesus. It's a hard thing to lose your faith and I have been looking very hard for reasons to justify it, mostly in vain.
It seems most atheists are thinkers and are willing to seek that. I'd say most christians, however, are just in a group and do not think much on the bible or christianity and it's impact on the world. It's too familiar for christians, I guess, so they just let it collect dust.
But maybe I'm reading a bit too much of myself into other atheists.

How far have you gotten through the Bible? Maybe you just haven't read enough to see why it would be one of the main reasons a lot of atheists first started to doubt Christianity.
Reading the Bible is what started me down the path of questioning....God isn't so nice in many parts of that book and women are treated like second class citizens in most of it. Yes, I know there are some good parts and that apologists have came up with answers for some of the parts that sound bad...most of their apologetic answers don't hold up under further scrutiny.

well, most atheists havent read the bible cover to cover. they just hear a few lines from other non believers that show how "stupid" the bible is, and then claim to have read the whole thing by quoting those lines. i will admit though, if you do read the bible cover to cover, you will find things in it that are inconsistent with what some Christians do, that just goes to show you how many Christians have not read the bible as well. and the last thing is you dont even need to read the bible to believe in God, just look deep into nature, science, and other things and you will find yourself believing more and more.

I can not explain others actions (unless they say what it is), nor do I believe everything Christians or non-Christians tend to say in this country presently. While they may not admit it, the 'church' I was raised in (and became a deacon of) was not the 'church' of the Holy Bible. I have read the Bible through several times. There are things that have been added to it, and things taken away from it. One primary thing is man looking at it on an equal basis, not accepting Jesus' words on a superiority basis. That is very similar to what the atheist/agnostics do (equal basis).

lol, I have noticed that. I myself have read the bible cover to cover several times. Which could be why I failed Chem last year O.o... I think we're looking for Loopholes, I also experimented with lots of different religions before I decided that abolishing religion would be better than studying it. Reading the Bible just happened to be a part of my search. It also comes in handy when you want to argue with Radical christian nut jobs over their twisted ideals.
No offence to you. You seem like a nice christian :) Not one of the crazy ones...like my best freind's mother T_T"

To be fair, I read through the Bible back when I was a Christian.
I became an atheist for many reasons, one of which is that I studied the religion and found it lacking.
