Son would like to play baseball, coach says his hair has to be cut in order to play. No one I've talked to as of yet has given me one good reason as to why. Another parent of a son who also has long hair is also raising the issue. Girls play sports and most have long hair, I smell discrimination! Any thoughts?

decency and long hair aren't this issue.
this issue is sports.
does this coach expect them not to dirty their uniforms? it is not the army. two, just because i child does not wish to cut his hair does not make him a "team player".
it just goes to show you there are still biased opinions when it comes to guys who wear long hair.
goverment employee's have long hair, teachers have long hair....
if your gonna practice what you preach then ALL people attending school would need to adhere to the same exact rule (even though there is not such a rule stated anywhere in the athletics rule book, nor the student handbook) so how could that give coach the reign on his personal opinion.....opinions are not rules.

My guess is the coach is merely trying to instill some team discipline for the boys. He's probably ex-military.

I don't think you'll be able to make a claim of discrimination stick; schools often maintain separate standards of dress for girls and for boys, with no legal trouble.
However, if your son attends public school, your coach may be crossing the line in terms of restricting free expression.
Your first step should be sitting down with the coach and a school administrator. Ask the coach for his reasons and hear him out patiently. State your case calmly, and document everything that was said in the meeting.
If you are really serious about pursuing this, it can't hurt to contact the ACLU: www.aclu.org.

I really don't look at it as discrimination. It is a matter of decency and respect. These guidlines are there for our kids to learn that in this world our appearence is important when applying for a job or when we want to be taken seriously for any social event we want to be apart of. The argument for girls having long hair is a cop out. My son says long hair gets in the way and slows you down during sports. The same is for females. His girlfriend plays basketball and cut her hair as it was in her way.

1. the girls have to put there hair up or cut there hair for sports.
2. for girls in water sports they have to wear plastic hot rubber caps and for water polo they boys don't have to were caps.
3. for water polo girls have to wear two or three bathing suits and boys don't
4. if your son goes out on the field looking like a slob, the other team will think he is not good and does not take the sport that seriously.
5. good presentation equals good intimidation
6. imagine a group of dancers or cheer leaders going out on the field or performing looking like boys.
7. shorter hair is more hygienic for boys because they sweat more and they are less likely to be as hygienic as girls.
8. you can ask for him to be able to put his hair on top of his head like girls HAVE TO when playing softball and believe me it will get hot and he will want to cut his hair soon after a couple games of that.
reasons why girls are discriminated that you should ask your self before protesting
1. have you seen alot of girl major league softball games on TV lately?
2. why are girls not aloud to play baseball but boys are allowed to play softball ( by the way the only time girls were allowed to play in the major leages was in war time, and softball is very different than baseball if you are thinking that it is the same).
3. have you been to a softball girls soft ball game.
4. girl and women athletes are paided alot less.
5. there is alot less money for girl sports and after school activeities, so many are stoping.
6. boys have there own fields and girls for softball just use what is avialbe
P.S. what you smell is your son

Oh you are so right!!!!!
There is absolutely no reason why he cannot pull his hair into a rubber band and PLAY BALL!
Go to the school super.....go to the next board meeting.....total discrimination........I would go as far and get a lawyer if I had to stick up for my sons right to wear his hair anyway he wanted.........
GOOD LUCK.....let us know what happens.
