I've tested positive for strep throat 5 times this year. No one else in my house gets it. Does anyone know why?

Some people are more sensitive to streptococci than others. Some people's immune systems don't function as well as others. sometimes our environment is such that we keep getting reinfected.

One friend of mine said her daughter had it for a year. I've also had recurrencesz and have to be very careful.

A common cause of reinfection, believe it or not, is our toothbrushes. Our toothbrushes should normally be replaced at least every 3 months, but if we come down with something, we should replace it then, right after we're not catching anymore,, so as not to reinfect ourselves. Sometimes we harbor the germs and remain carriers, and relapse from colonies that are able to stay in places like the back of our nasal passages in back of the uvula. so I got some saline solution to rinse my nasal passages. It is a form of strep that causes tooth decay too, so if our gums and teeth need attention we should take care of that. Strep germs are actually everywhere, and there are usually some in people's throats, but not enough to bother us, and mixed in with other friendly bacteria. If you have been on anitbiotics that have killed your friendly bacteria, then you might benefit from eating yogurt, if you can, or getting some lactobacillus from your pharmacy to replace the friendly bacteria and balance. It could be that your wife is a carrier,, has the germs but is not sick,, and is passing them to you and you are more sensitive.

These are some possibilities to check out. I hope they help

Streptococcus is a bacteria that causes strep throat. Some people continually get it because of tonsils, or toothbrushes, yes. (If you had strep, then brushed your teeth again with same toothbrush within 12 hours) More than likely, you are a carrier. A certain percentage of people are carriers and do not get rid of it.

The doctor can try to remove your tonsils to get rid of it, but that doesn't mean you won't get it again. Most likely, they will have to put you on a strong dose of antibiotics for a continued period of time. Then they will test you periodically and continue meds until cultures come back negative.

sounds an awful lot like strep. are you sure you got an antibiotic shot and not something else? Even if you did, different bacteria respond differently to different antibiotics. Flu could have left you susceptible to another infection. throat culture from your doc will be the best way to confirm or rule out strep.

Yes, a few years ago I had a sore throat that lasted about eight weeks. It was just on one side but the meds. I was taking was no help. I went back to my ENT about each week. The last time I went I looked up at him and said, "how much time do I have left". I was only teasing. He went across the hall and got another ENT to look down my throat, and tell me what do you see. He said I just see an inflamed throat. I was given a different medication,(steroids) and was healed in about one week..
i was given corkisone (sp)

Strep is a bacteria (streptococcus). That's what they are
testing for.

If you continually have it, then you are either not getting rid of
it, or you are occasionally getting re-exposed to it.

So ... are you ever getting completely well?

Presumably the doctor has given you drugs for this. Have
you taken them ALL (vs. until you started to feel better)?
If you don't take them all, you may be evolving your own
colony of drug resistant bacteria.

Stay away from me, please...

Yes it is, especially if it is a viral strep. If it's viral it's hard to get rid of. I was put on three types of antibiotics before mine went away. Anytime I get it nobody else in my house gets it. Of course if they ate or drank after me they would. I don't think it's as contagious as we might think.
