I just got laid off from my job, is there any kind of assistance that I can get from the government or any organization to help pay for my medicine and my psychiatrist visits?

I live in the San Francisco south bay

I heard the job market is really good right now, but im having a lot of panic attacks lately and don’t know how soon I will be able to get a new job because of this.

Yes there is help and lots of it. I've seen advertised 1-800-4PPA-NOW, I've used http://pparx.org which is what Montel Williams talks about. My wife and I have both gotten approved for a years worth of our medications for FREE, we got applications on-line and get our meds 3 months at a time for free; look at your medication alert paper that comes with every script and see who the manufacturer is, go directly to that site to download an application. There is probably no one that will pay for your psychiatrist visits, you will probably have to seek out a counseling center.

One more thing, while my wife and I were with-out drug coverage and before our free medicines arrived from the drug companies, both of our doctors were great about giving us free samples, a month at a time, for quite awhile, all we had to do was ask, we didn't even have to see the doctors. I'm also laid off and I wish you well.

This is the first time I have ever responded in this category and I have read some very interesting information here. I just wanted to thank the community who have written and shared their insight. I had no idea that some of the disabilities of which you speak had so much support. It seems that more and more we have 'drugs' for more ailments than I have ever known in my lifetime. Additionally, the disabled or challenged groups of individuals also have increased. The government can't be in a position to help everyone - as previously stated - there are groups of people who believe in causes and this is where their money goes to support. There are some days that I go to my school as a teacher and I dread having to walk up several flights of stairs with all my bags. My knees hurt, I have "arthur" who visits regularly now. I'd love to have a special place to park - I'd love to have the elevator key- and any other special privileges that would be allowed someone in my position - but you know - I keep moving. I say to myself that I am not beat - not by a longshot and there are still some things I can do to better my situation and be healthier. So I get on it - and I pray for those who are truly disabled and challenged.

Hi there, I just laugh about my past 3 years of panic now. I was not able to go anywhere without carrying xanax. Fear of having another attack was the most important subject of my days. When i first found joe barry's web site i started to cry because of my happiness.

You can go to the ER with your panic attacks and they may have samples of the meds you need.

Try your local Dept of Family and Children Services or dial 211 from your home phone.

If you had ins. thru your job then you should have Cobra and you can continue your benefits.

Some pharmaceutical companies offer help to people who can't afford their medicatinons, so you could check that out.

Also..though likely illegal, you can do what many californians do: go to Tijuana or Mexicali and purchase them on the cheap.

try visiting your local public health department. some health departments have clinics that are low cost and that can help you with paying for yor medication. if they dont have a clinic, then they will be able to refer you to a clinic in your area that provides low cost health care and medication coverage. especially living in the bay area, there should be plenty of health departments around that you can visit and look for resources to help you.
