the crusades, deuteronomy, blah blah blah!

The crusades were over 600 years ago, and deuteronomy was written over 2500 years ago. Sorry people, help me out here? Who is committing violence in the name of religion, and who complains most about the stereotypes?

Some men really do still use the bible as a reason for why they beat their wives.

From a person who worked in an intervention program for abusive husbands:

"You've never worked with guys in an intervention group who beat their wives "for their own good" but claim to love them with all their heart. And many say the bible says they can beat them. So you have the simplified ideas that either:

1. They're lying.
2. They only think they love their wives.

However, it's actually more complicated than that and they can love their wives and beat them and feel justified - cognitive biases, attributional errors, distortion in perception of actions, and on and on all play into. Sometimes there are drugs and alcohol involved that may play a major role and many times there are not. Some think they feel love when it is only severe co-dependence which is paralleled by self-esteem pampering need to show dominance.

It's a lot more complicated than - "you can't beat your wife if you love her". We're not in elementary school anymore, life isn't that simplistic."

People also use their religion as a reason to blow up abortion clinics or physically attack gays. Some still even use it as a basis for hating black people.

So, people still do use religion to justify violence, even in modern day America.

Who uses religion to justify violence? Insane extremists. In my opinion religion is based in actions, not a specific book or text. I have plenty of muslim friends who are the nices people you would ever meet so its not just them. I dont know if any of you have heard about it recently but there are a lot of crazy christians who will toture and disect people because they want to figure out why theyre 'possesed by the devil'.
Really the only people who try to rationalize theyre actions through religion are too afraid to admit that what theyre doing is wrong, and instead of trying anything else they go for violence.

In the very first war in recorded history - The Cave Men versus The River People - which occurred some 14,000,000 years ago, archaeologists found some interesting inscriptions near the battlefield.

From the Cave Men - "We Fight for the Great God of Caves!!!"
and
From the River People - "We Fight for the Great God of Rivers!!!"

and, now this is very odd, archaeologists also found this inscription:
"We Love the Village People - YMCA, YMCA."

I think it's time to start reminding people to be specific as to which violence and where and how many people were involved?
Hate leads to violence. And the hate I see around here is not coming from the christian or religious or even just plain intelligent people but from the 'haters.' And it's 'haters' that start violence.

Psychotic freaks who are looking for any reason to justify violence. Islam is supposed to be a peaceable religion so anyone who kills in it's name surely cannot be a good Muslim.

If you cant see it, then you are well and truely brainwashed.
I guess nowadays the terms have more 'secular' sounding words.
like "War on Terror", Jihad, "Operation Iraqi Freedom", sanctions, "Evil and Barbaric Dictator", "Axis of EVIL", "Rogue Nation", "Freedom Fighters","La ilah illa Allah", "Terrorists", "Savages", "An Evil and Dark Enemy within", "Not good stewards of the land", "Insurgents", "The War to End All Wars", "Either for us or against us". You see, its been happening all the time, where have you been? They just drop the references to 'God' and 'Jesus' in the public arena.
The crusades are on today.
Christians vs Muslims vs Christians vs Communist vs Christians vs All Unbelievers.
When did you think the 'crusades' stopped?
