I would buy lice shampoo at the store and use that. On her child herself and anyone else in the household. After the treatment make sure your friend uses the lice/egg comb. It's very time consuming to go through all the hair but make sure she does it or they can return. Launder all the bedding in hot water. If there are things that cannot be washed in hot water put the item in a plastic bag/container and seal it. (A comforter bag is great since it has a zipper and you can put multiple items in it). Make sure all the clothes are washed also. Vacuum the entire house everyday for a few weeks. You can buy Rid lice spray for furniture also. That works great. Also, don't forget to put the stuffed animals in bags. Repeat the shampoo treatment in a few weeks.
In cases where shampoo doesn't seem to be working. You may have a strain of lice that's resistant to the medicine in the shampoo. If that happens, and I know this sounds weird but put Vaseline or mayonnaise all over the hair. Put a shower cap over it. Wait 30 mins then wash it out. However, both products have a residue that's hard to get out. It eventually will come out after a few days of washing. so be patient. My daughter got lice from her daycare and I couldn't get rid of it. I made an appt with her Dr. and she suggested the above to me. It worked perfectly. I wish your friend luck!!

Get a good nit comb and thick conditioner and find a room with lots of light. Good nit combs are metal. Without a good nit comb you will not be able to remove the eggs.
Look for the living adult lice, which have pinchers in front, and scuttle around. The small, white "crawly" things are the little immature lice and the white/brown microscopic things attached to the hair shaft are the eggs.
Disperse thick conditioner thoroughly through the hair of the affected person. Doing so will make the hair silky and much easier to comb through with fine tooth combs, and will also loosen the eggs so that they slide right off the strands.
Separate and clip the hair up into four sections and start combing, stopping to wipe the lice and eggs on a towel every few strokes. Continue until all the sections are done.
Repeat, wash the combs, and start again. You should comb through the hair until not a single egg or nit shows up! This will probably take an hour or so.
Pour a cup of white vinegar into a pitcher of water. Vinegar is also supposed to help loosen the eggs. Wash the hair out with the vinegar rinse and then with water.
Clean all of the infected person's contaminated belongings: clothes, towels, and bedding will need to be washed in hot water, and their mattress and room vacuumed thoroughly. Use the hottest setting on the dryer and dry for the longest time you can without harming the fabric.
Wait a day, and then repeat the process.
Again, comb through the hair until not one of the lice shows up. Repeat again. And again. And yet again. Usually two weeks will pass until all the lice are gone.

In addition to yowww kelly and sara bellum's excellent answers, I would add that the best lice comb I found was actually a flea comb. It was fine enough to really get the nits, it's metal so it doesn't snap and break like the plastic combs can, and because it's about 3 or 4 times longer than the little plastic combs that come with commercial lice products, it's faster to get the job done.

Use lice shampoo and comb out every strand of hair (it takes ages) to remove the eggs. If it is a boy, why not shave his head, it will grow back. Change all the sheets and pillows in the bed they sleep in and really clean thier room. Put all stuffed animals into the freezer and leave them there for a few weeks.
