i went to the doctor's today and they did a skin test on me and a little bit of blood came out. and i almost fainted upon seeing that blood. my head got really heavy, i couldn't see anything, my legs were failing me. i kept a shoe conversation going with the nurse and i didn't get dizzy in the room, but i got dizzy in the lobby. this always happens, so what do i do to help it? and please don't tell me to keep pricking myself with needles.

Your fear is not uncommon and if anyone tells you to keep pricking yourself with needles, they are an idiot, that doesn't work. I prick myself everyday and I still hate it. (blood sugar) I have to have my blood tested every three months. I sweat and I struggle every single time and I ALMOST pass out too.

The thing that I do that helps me is I don't watch them poke me and I don't watch the blood come out. I laugh and I joke with the person that is taking my blood. I also look around the room or out the window. They know my fear, so they have me sit for a few minutes after and give me a drink of water and sometimes even a piece of candy or a cookie.

Being that it's a frequent thing , I am not as bad as I used to be, but the fear is still there.

You just have to learn to relax, breathe slow and easy, laughing and joking helps, looking out the window helps, and again don't get up right away just sit still for a few minutes and ask for some water.

Dont look, hold someones hand, Just always tell them not to let you know what they are doing and when they will have everything put away or bring things out, I am deathly afraid of needles but I have piercings ( go figure) I also have kids and when we both had to get pricked for iron checks I asked them to do the kids first, because if they saw me first they wouldnt want to get theirs done because I would show them that it hurt me! so avoid looking at everything as much as possible and ask for no details, tell them do it and get it over with. BTW I have passed out TWICE from needles.

This happens to me every time I go to the doctor, too. Except I actually do faint. And it doesn't even have to involve the sight of blood. They refer to it as white-coat anxiety, and my doctor told me there really isn't anything that can be done to stop it. Just be sure you're seated when you know that you're going to encounter something medically graphic. (I cut my hand last week and despite my best efforts to concentrate on something other than the blood pooling in my palm, I couldn't handle it. While standing at the kitchen sink rinsing the wound I started to feel dizzy and the next thing I knew I was staring up at the ceiling of my kitchen. Fun times.)

Eventually, you will out grow this. I too suffered from this. My doctor would tell me to lie down when I felt like passing out. Well, I still fainted even though I was laying down. I can't tell you how many times I had that over powering feeling that most of the time I couldn't control. I just started to avoid situations that would bring it on. Now....it doesn't bother me at all. Weird...huh? but I have to say that I suffered a good 20 years from it before I finally got over it. Hang in there and Best of Luck to ya as well...

That happens to a lot of people. I actually once did faint after they pulled some blood out of me.

Since then I just do not look at all, I only look into the opposite direction and that helps just fine.

When they are drawing blood, you should not look at the needle or the site, turn your head and keep focused on another thought, like being at the beach, or what you need to do when you get home, etc. Just keep thinking the needle prick is an insect bite and keep focused on another thought.

Just try not to look at the blood or needles. Concentrate on something else in the room. Believe me, my fear is overly embarrassing. Heh, e-mail me if you want to know my fear. I don't feel like posting it where everyone can see. :)

Hope everything turns out better for you!
