Well, keeping it trimmed is the first step. Consider the following:
1) Do you heat style your hair frequently?
If you do, treat your hair with something like Infusium or VO5 in the shower. Or invest some money and get Butter Treat by Redken (part of their Smooth Down line) or All Soft Silk Fuel you can use it as a treatment in-shower, or use a little bit as a leave-in on towel dried hair; it protects it from heat styling and repairs damage.
2) Do you swim in chlorine or salt water frequently? Out in the sun?
To prevent hair from drying out from swimming, saturate hair with fresh water before and after swimming. Also, you can apply conditioner to hair (damped from fresh water) before swimming. Wear a hat to protect hair from the sun, or use a UV hair protectant.
3) Do you brush your hair roughly, or when it's wet?
If your hair knots easily or if it's knotty when you get out of the shower, you can damage it by handling it roughly - when it's wet it the hair shaft is saturated with water and breaks much more easily. Use a good conditioner - one that works through difficult hair (again, I'd invest in a professional product - Redken is my favorite! - cheaper products really can take a toll on hair).
Also, use a wide-toothed comb - while condition is still in - to carefully work out the knots.
Best of luck!

You are seeing the difference from freshly cut ends to not freshly cut ends.you cant ever get rid of split ends forever. You have to remember they look worse to than to someone else.Someone else probably doesn't even notice. I am the same way. I see these huge split ends and when I get my hair cut they look at me like I am crazy.Try using a gentle shampoo and a good conditioner go to a public beauty supply store and get a reconstructor and put it on you hair with a plastic cap for an hour.I ignore the directions and do a hour.Don't use hot wax it doesn't penetrate into the shaft .The packet shouldn't be more than two dollars make sure my6 hairs really moist and I cover it with a packet and I use saran wrap instead of a cap but a cap is good.I hope this helps.

Half of the cure for split ends is prevention: Don't brush your hair too much, and be sure to use brushes and combs with smooth, wide-set teeth; avoid nylon bristles. And no matter what, don't brush wet hair! If you have knots, use a wide-toothed comb or your fingers to gently detangle from the ends up, one section at a time. Elastic bands -- even the covered ones -- and barrettes can cause breakage. If you put your hair in a ponytail, use a scrunchie; when wearing barrettes, take care not to catch hair in the metal clip. Of course, a trim will rid you of split ends instantly. In the meantime, a split-end treatment, a leave-in conditioner with light hold or a pomade applied to the ends can temporarily seal the splits.

here is what causes split ends:
brushing hair when wet...brush from botton to top and slowly
flat ironing and leaving it on your hair long....
try not doing n-e of those things and see if that helps...other wise, trim, trim, trim!!!!!
