First, whatever you do, DON'T DO NIPPLE STIMULATION!!!!This should only be done with direct supervision of your doctor. It can create bad contractions that do nothing to further dilation and effacement. Also, don't take castor oil. It's nasty stuff and has really bad, unpleasant side effects. There are some things you can try, but there is no guarentee that they will work.
Try having sex. I know it sounds weird, but semen contains prostolandins that help soften the cervix. Orgasm for you can help bring on contracts and will release endorphines to help make you feel happier if nothing else.
Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk. There is nothing better to get labor going. Try walking with your hunny. Talk a nice long stroll around the block, or go the mall and check out every store. Do stairs when possible, or small hills. Just make sure your pulse doesn't go over 140/bpm.
You can try some eveing primerose oil. It comes in either caplets or just the oil. The caplets are easier to work with. Take 2 caplets and insert them into your vagina, up by your cervix. Do this before bed and then go to sleep. By the time you wake up, they will have dissovled and the oil will have been soaked up into your cervix. It won't start contractions, but can soften the cervix to help with dilation and effacement.
You can do accupressure. The best spot in on your hand, between your thumb and first finger. You will feel a spot that is sore. That's the spot!! Press and hold between the thumb and first finger of your other hand and hold for 20-30 seconds. Release and press again. Do this for 20-30 minutes at a time.
Try to relax!! There is nothing that will help you more then relaxing. I know it's hard, but trust me, sometimes relaxing is all you need to get things going. Try a nice warm bath, maybe with bubbles and your sweetie, with relaxing music. Have your sweeite rub your feet or your back to help relax you. Take some time to be together. After this baby is born, those times will be few and far between.
I can tell you that there really isn't anything you can do to make this baby come. It's all on baby time. I was dilated to a 5, 80% effaced at my 38 week apt. I was induced, but only because my BP was high. Some women can be dilated for a month before labor starts. If nothing else, the doctor will induce if you get too far along and there is still no baby.

Nipple Stimulation
What is Nipple Stimulation?
Gentle rubbing or rolling of the nipple, or suckling of the nipples to encourage contractions is called nipple stimulation.
Why does Nipple Stimulation work?
Oxytocin, a hormone that causes contractions, is released in the body when the breasts are stimulated. After the baby is born, this release is important for the involution (returning to pre-pregnancy size) of the uterus. In labor, the release can be used to stimulate longer or stronger contractions.
How do I do it?
To stimulate the release of oxytocin, you must mimic the suckling of a baby. When a baby suckles, he does not grab just the nipple, but actually massages the areola (dark circle around the nipple).
The mother may prefer to massage her own areola. To do this she can rub the areola in a gentle rolling way with her palm or fingers. This can be done through thin clothing.
NOTE: Nipple stimulation can have very strong effects, similar to the overuse of Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin). For this reason various experts have given recommendations on its use. Here are some recommendations I have seen at various sources:
Only massage one breast at a time
Only massage a nipple for 5 minutes, wait up to 15 minutes to see what happens before continuing with the massage
Do not stimulate the breast during a contraction
Do not use nipple stimulation after the contractions are 3 minutes apart or 1 minute long
Some sample nipple stimulation techniques:
When trying to induce labor or speed up a prolonged early labor, have the mother go about her regular activities. Set a timer to go off every hour. When the timer indicates, have the mother stimulate one breast for 5 minutes, then continue with her normal activities.
If the mother is anxious for labor to begin, combine the effects of natural nipple stimulation with the natural prostaglandin released in semen by encouraging the mother and her partner to engage in intercourse.
In the hospital, have the mother place her palm over the nipple and areola and give a firm but gentle pressure. Encourage the mother to move the palm in a circular motion, keeping the firm and gentle pressure.

If you're getting regular pre natal care(It sounds like you are) Ask your doctor if he is willing to induce labor with a drug called Ptosin. If there are no contraindications for you, he will probably be more than happy to oblige you. That way he (and you ) have control of the ball for scheduling purposes-you can plan yopur baby shower, and he can still make the first tee by 1;00. Also this is WAY better for you than a casaerian section (which way too many doctors are also too happy to recommend for purposes of scheduling AND they get paid more- heavens - how could I be so crass as to discuss financial gratification issues at adelicate time like this) My wife Ana says by the time you finish this rant they'll be done having him or her(as parents of 6 we can't say just -It.).

As far as the pains in your back it could be back labor pains. I had those with my son and they hurt like hell but they were not consistant. it helps alittle if you put a couple pillows under your back longways from shoulders to where your butt meets your back and lay so that your hip is on the bed but your are leaning back on the pillows. It couldnt hurt to put a pillow between your legs either. For the plug, that usually means that your body is getting ready to have the baby. You didnt say when your due date is but if it soon you should be okay if its not and you still have like a month to go i would stay off you feet as much as possible.

OMG I feel your pain...I'm in a similar situation...I was in the hospital on Tuesday, 1cm, and then again yesterday 1.5cm, each time with hard contractions. Mine were very regular, 4 min apart for several hours and then just stopped! The nurses were stumped and I left in tears wishing that all of this would just be over with!!! I'm sorry that I can't help, but I do completely sympathize and wish you the best of luck for quick relief!!

If you want to speed things along then get a breast pump and use it. Nipple stimulation will help things get going (that is IF and a huge IF your body and baby are ready)
Stimulating your nipples releases a hormone that is responsible for getting labor going and keeping it going.
Good luck. You are almost there. Before too long you will be holding your baby and missing the time you were pregnant.

Hi I was 37 1/2wks pregnant and i was having pain.. I was telling my co-workers its time to get her out.. She is causing soo much discomfort. The doctor said it was fine if i went into labor already cause i was over 37wks.. So i put in my leave and I was going to start it after the weekend.. My leave was just to prepare for the baby you know cleaning getting things ready for her ... I was already dilated by 1cm lost my plug like 1 wk before i was thinning out , but my doc said it could be a couple of weeks, but its possible. What i did that sunday evening was looked at my husband and said she's gotta come out.. im hurting from all the soreness in lower abd, back pain and pinched nerve.. So we jumped in bed and made love.. it was great!! i enjoyed it alot and i knew this would speed the process.. we later got ready for bed and as soon as i layed down i heard a bubble gulp sound inside me.. It was weird and short after a gush of fluids.. i got up and ran to the bathroom and sat on the toilet and told my husband OMG its time!! I was sooo relieved.. We broke my water.. I went to the hospital 3 hrs later.. no bad painful contractions yet.. but with my first it was like 4 hrs of labor and i pushed her out in 20 to 30 mins.. the second one i had her a couple of hours later my epidural didnt work cause i got it too late.. i started having really bad pain 30 mins before i gave birth.. and i could feel the epidural giving me tingly sensation in my toes but I FELT EVERY BIT OF IT.. i couldnt take it after 15 mins an started pushing and got her out in minutes.. IT WAS AMAZINGLY QUICK!!! She came out very health with a full head of hair, eye lashes everything.. SHE S BEAUTIFUL and 6 mons now, I get nothing but good compliments on how beautiful she is.. SO all you have to do is have SEX my dear it works the semen acts as an acid and helps thin your cervix. GOOD LUCK!!

Ouch, during my first pregnancy I was in the same situation. By the time the actual delivery came around I was spent, as in they had to freeze me from the waist down to kill the pain. I swore I would never have another child after the agony I went through. They want you to suffer it out especially during your first pregnancy because it allows your body to give on it's own without getting all torn up by pushing that really gets you nowhere. Hang in there, long bumpy car rides, walking and nice warm baths. Hope things turn out okay for you.

One great thing is you can't be pregnant for ever. I know your anxious, but it'll happen when you least expect it. Just try to enjoy getting as much sleep as you can now because it's no joke when the baby comes you'll long for some occasionally relaxation time.
