The Smart fortwo diesel does over 100mpg, officially the most fuel efficient car you can buy.
Even my petrol Smart can beat most diesels given that my best figure is 78mpg and my average is 65mpg.

Well it's difficult to define best as it depends on what you are looking for in the overall car. However, there are 7 models of car in the UK that are diesel and get over 54MPG so based on your description of an economic diesel car, I would say any of these 7 fit your needs. They are:Citroen C1, Citroen C2, Citroen C3, Fiat Panda, Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 206 and Toyota Aygo (gets 68.9MPG).
Based on my 12+ years in the motor industry, I would focus on the Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 206 or most probably the Toyota Aygo.

I have a peugeot 306 1.9 diesel turbo and it is absoutly brilliant does 50 mpg and is the most reliable car i have ever had

New car in the US? VW Golf. VW Beetle is slightly cheaper.
Maybe one day they'll make the Rabbit TDI.

any peugeot is economical, they make diesel engines for rover bmw, citroen and ford... best engines you can get...
