My house recently flooded and my insurance provider is going to replace the flooring on my stairs and the upstairs landing but not the bedrooms on either end (upstairs). Currently the stairs, landing and both bedrooms have matching cream carpet and the bathroom has wood laminate. I'm not sure what to put on the stairs and landing that will look good with the old bedroom carpets. A different colour carpet? Wood? I think if I try to match the carpet exactly it will look bad because the old carpet is slightly discoloured. Help!

you're probaly right the carpet will never match and a different color may look odd. i would discuss further with your insurance agent and tell about your concerns. if you can't get them to budge I would replace with wood laminate. good luck.

Carpet will end up cheaper to put in. If both carpets that are staying are cream then you hav no problem cause any colour goes well with it.( You didn't say what type flooring is at the bottom of the stairs so I won't worry about it.) If you can find a pattern you like and that ties in with the main house colours I would go there, but if you'd rather a solid... just pick what you like. It's all good.

In the late 80s and most of the 1990s it was only correct to use the same color of carpet in the entire house. Now it is correct to use different carpets in different areas. Each area can have its own personality. I think you will find it very expensive to put laminate on the steps, each step in laminate costs almost as much as the entire set of steps in carpet. Also remember the first offer from the insurance co is just the first offer. Ask for more $.

I would definitely use wood or tile. It might even be interesting to have different textures, rather than all carpet
