My question has several parts:
1) Why do people get married in the spring or summer? I mean, it is ONLY becuase of the weather, or are there other ritualistic reasons?
2) I live in NE Ohio (we have cold, snowy winters). What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of a winter wedding?
3) What about a wedding near Christmas time... positives and negatives.
Any thoughts would be great, Thanks!

At most there would only be 4 or 5 people flying in (2 of which would most likely be in town regardless). And 98% of the would-be attendees live within 30 miles.

The actual "hypothetical" date would be Dec 29.

* Just a note, I'm not actually engaged yet- but thanks for the well-wishes.*
I guess I should explain a little further. My grandparents were married on Dec 29 and they were happily married for 62 years (they have both passed away, now) and I thought it would be a great honor to share their anniversary.
Don't worry I wouldn't infringe on people's Christmas plans.. Christmas is a very special time for my family.

I am getting married in July of next year because that is the time that works out best for us (and I LOVE summertime!) It is also the day that my future husband and I first talked to eachother in 2005. So, there are different reasons for everyone's choices for a wedding date, I guess.

I think it would be wonderful to be able to share your grandparents' anniversary date. That is SOOOO sweet! I am very into sentimental things like that! A Christmas wedding would be beautiful too! That would probably be my second choice for the time of year to get married!

Hope all goes well whenever you decide to get married! (but engaged first! haha)

People get married in the spring and summer because there is much better weather outside. You dont have to worry about snow, ice or storms for the most part. Older guests feel more comfortable traveling outside of the colder months.

A winter wedding is inherently more cheaper (except around holidays), and you can always find an open venue to do it at. That would be a pro. Cons would be, lack of choices of fresh flowers, guests not being able to come during that time, storms, and it may be too cold.

Around Christmas is asking a bit much. Too many people are fretting over the holidays, and even of you have a tight knit family, there still a few who may not be able to show up.It is also more expensive due to the holiday. Most companies would have to pay their employees time and a half, so they would charge you more. Also, hotels are booked up from families coming in town to visit other relatives for the holidays.

I am having a winter wedding, to a point- i chose March because it is on the tail end of winter, not much goes on in March, and family is willing to travel during that time.

I will answer all your questions.
1. People prefer spring/summer because of the weather, and because it's prettier outside. Not to mention, not having to worry about having a giant snowstorm the day of your wedding.
2. One of the advantages of a winter wedding is the price. Most places will give you a HUGE discount for getting married between Jan-March. December is a no go because of holiday business.
3. I would wait until after the New Year. There are so many holidays, family functions, and running around, that many people simply won't have the time to get ready for, and attend a wedding. Many people also take vacations around Christmas.

Congratulations on your engagement, and good luck on your wedding plans!

1. The "tradition" of getting married in May-July comes back from the old days where the royals & even commoners took their yearly baths in May (like a real bath not just a wet rag or what have you). So in May-July they were still moderatly clean. I got married in the first week May because it wasn't overly hot. Also, the flowers outside (our wedding was outside) kept me from having to buy some for decoration. Of course we were on pins and needles until the day before because we feared rain, but we had a back up plan just in case.
2. Advantages: I was in a Dec. 14 wedding at 7pm, the bride's sister did the silk flower bouqets and she did this neat thing where she took those 10 bulb strings of christmas lights and blended them into the flower arrangements (they have a battery pack. I'd be happy to send you pictures of it- email me.

Disadvantages: I knew someone else that on their wedding day it snowed like 6 inches and they insisted on going ahead with the whole deal and little no one showed up (not even the photographer). The mother of the bride did show up, slipped, and broke her ankle. I hate the cold too- so winter weddings suck in my opinion- atleast i wouldn't choose it if I had it to do all over again. Plus it's the holiday season and the vendors (caterer, photgraphers, banquet halls) will all be booked for events or charge you a butt load.

3. I think I got to this in #2, but I forgot- if it's near christmas, lots of people might be out of town or will be strapped for cash (ie your gift) since they bought presents.

regardless, it's your day (whenever you choose it), make the most of it!! I really will email you the flower pictures if your interested.

1)Because alot of people want to have an outdoor wedding and that's when most people can take a vacation.
2)The winter Months are just to cold to get married outside. If people want to have an outdoor wedding.and the venues cost way to much during the winter.
3)Don't get married Near Christmas because alot of family's have plans to be together at Christmas time.So don't have you're wedding on December 25th

1) Yes. Most people don't want rain on their wedding day.
2) Pros: cheaper services and locations, Cons: people might not be willing to travel to cold cold Ohio for your wedding, no outdoor venues
3) Christmas time is cute, but already stressful, people have family plans, travel is very expensive. If you don't have many people who need to fly in, you should be fine, just be respectful of other people's holiday plans. And don't do it on Dec 25th. That's just wrong.
