Well, at first we thought it was a tumor, it came out of no where, and it's under the skin. It's gotten so big that it's swollen her throat up, she hasn't eaten in days or even a bit more than a week, and she can barely breathe. She has lost more than 12 pounds from not eating. we've taken her to a doctor and he said at first it didn't look to good (like cancer), and then drew some blood and took a sample of the bubble. the results came back and apparently they messed something up. now the doc drew some more from it, and it was all pus, but now he says that it just looks like it could be an infection of a tooth (we wont get results back from the last test until wed. or thur.) but it's all the way down her neck, and it's the size of a tennis ball! has any other dog owners expirienced the same thing, and what ended up happening? oh, and the dog is a 13 year old female black lab. i appriciate any help. thank you.

I would really like to take her to another vet, but it's my boyfriends dog and for 1)he and his family are states away right now and 2) they put the dog in the vets office for the time that they are away. by the time they get back the results will be in. I don't like this vet either, but alas it is not up to me. i am just wondering what it could be. i told him he should have taken her in once she started having trouble breathing a week or so ago.

Thank you for all the very good answers, i don't know which one to pick as the best because there is so many with good advice! Thank you all again!

Good grief! Get her to a different vet.

It could be as simple as an abscess that needs to be lanced (& she'll need antibiotics). Or worse. But if she's lost that much weight it sounds serious. 13 years old is getting up there for a lab, and since they've already screwed up once, I would definitely seek a second opinion in a hurry.

Good luck!

Your vet sounds very negligent. Any vet should know a dog can't go that long without being treated. I read the other responses and I agree, a snake bite sounds likely. I at first thought of a deer tick embedded in the skin which you can not see with the naked eye because a deer tick is so tiny, A deer tick can cause a huge infection. Get a magnifying glass and look for a teeny weeny tick. Pour hydrogen peroxide on the wound. Try to clean out the wound or take her to another vet to clean it out. Infection can kill a person or animal. A bite from almost any kind of animal ---bat, cat, dog, you name it ---can cause infection too. My younger cat bit my old cat in the neck and caused a huge infection in less than two days. I saw the young one attack the old one, but I had connected the two things. The vet told me the swelling infection caused by an animal bite and mostly likely a cat bite. They cleaned the wound out and gave me an antibiotic to give to my elder cat for the infection. It was really nasty and very swollen! Once they cleaned it out it went down. I don't like your vet. Take the dog to a different vet. Don't wait for the results of the tests.

Well it appears that the one vet is unable to help your dog. When you see that is the case then immediately switch to another vet. If your in stomach pain and the doctor says you are fine are you going to just go home. Not likely.

Hope you dog get better post haste.

The dog could have gotten a bot fly egg in there, or a maggot or some sort of bug could've laid something inside. You need to lance that thing and see what's in that boil. If it's got pus in it, the pus is there to isolate whatever's causing the problem. Hurry up, too! This is bad.

It sounds like an abcess. My cat had one on her cheek a few weeks ago. She had to have it lanced and be put on antibiotics. It finally went away though. Kinda sounds like thats what your dog has but I don't know for sure. Your vet should be able to tell.

Get her into the vet ASAP, inspite of it is, it would not sound good. Pus is a demonstration of an infection, perhaps she has a mass of a few style that should be bumped off. absolutely get it regarded at.

i have an older dog that developed a growth on his ear, it oozes and bleeds,my vet said it was an old dog growth, but it was infected so she gave me antibiotics for it,he still has it we just pour peroxide on it to keep it clean , if the vet didnt give you anything for it at least put a antibiotic cream on it to take care of any infection

does the dog go outside anywhere near foxtails? foxtails are a big problem with dogs ( & cats). your dog could of swallowed one that got stuck in her throat. or it could of very easily lodged in her skin. my dog had a growth by her neck, we took her to the vet & it burst (fortunately) all because of a foxtail. so if your dog is exposed to foxtails that might be something to let a NEW VET know. also if her teeth are bad the tooth infection is also a probability. my dog also had bad teeth which gave her problems later in her life. so if we love our dogs we need to brush their teeth (something I found out a little to late). good luck!

That can't be so good. Maybe the dog got into some sort of an accident and that is that result.

Excuse me...this has been going on for how long and you have not taken this seriously? That poor animal is in dire need of medical attention. I suggest you immediately get her to a vet.
