You should make sure you get all of the information about labs before you look for a reputable breeder in your area. Haven't had a lab in a long time, but there sure are a lot of them on petfinder, why? Because it takes them a long time to fully mature, meaning that they still act like puppies for a very long time. They are meant as a working breed and need stimulation to be happy, if they aren't walked and trained, and given a lot of attention and affection they can develop, hmmm, habits?
Don't get me wrong, they are amazing dogs just make sure you have all of the info before you get that cute lil puppy.
When getting your pup you should look into dog magazines, usually they have listings of breeders, they also have lists like that online.

Check out the breeders reputation before buying. Try the shelters, if the have them in your town. Sometimes they sell at a lower cost and first checkup is free. If it is not healthy, I don't think you have to keep it.

You should try all the pounds, rescue and animal welfare places. You'd be able to pick one up for free and those dogs are usually examined, given shots, meds., etc., so you pretty much know what you are getting.
