There are a few different types of anti-depressants. Here are the side effects for each type:
Antidepressants (tricyclics) can cause sedation, drowsiness, lethargy, difficulty thinking, confusion, poor concentration, memory problems, nightmares, panic feelings, and extreme restlessness; also delusions, manic reactions, delirium, seizures, fever, lowered white blood cell count (with risks of infection), liver damage, and heart attacks and strokes.
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) can cause headaches, nausea, anxiety and agitation, insomnia and bizarre dreams, loss of appetite, impotence, confusion and akathisia (akathisia is motor restlessness characterized by muscular quivering and the inability to sit still). It is estimated that between 10% and 25% of SSRI users experience akathisia, often in conjunction with suicidal thoughts, hostility and violent behavior.
MAOI Side effects: The most common side effect when taking an MAOI is insomnia. Other common adverse reactions include dry mouth, dizziness, feelings of lightheadedness, an excessive drop in blood pressure when standing, constipation, and weakness. Men taking MAOIs may experience sexual side effects with such symptoms as erectile dysfunction, delayed or painful ejaculation, loss of sexual sensation and anorgasmia (inability to reach orgasm). Some women have reported sexual side effects such as decreased libido and vaginal dryness. Less common side effects reported include rash, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, flushing, feelings of fear, chest pain, and headaches.

to the ones added above, i would add decreased libido, and also, rarely, panic attacks, agitation and suicidal thoughts( these last 2 side effects apply to kids taking anti depressants, not adults really) Insomnia is also reported as a side effect of anti depressants, and so is increased sweating. Anti depressants are also known to make your blood less likely to clot, so if you take anti clotting medications( aspirin , for example), heart medications, or blood pressure medications( beta blockers)make sure you check with your doctor before combining meds. It is because anti depressants lower blood pressure and so if on top of that, you take other drugs lowering the blood pressure, you can experience an unsafe drop in it and feel very dizzy
Drive with care as well, anti depressants affect concentration and reaction time negatively, although you may not be aware of it, as it is very subtle,( not like being drunk or anything)

Hummm, anti depressants are supposed to make you less sad. If she is getting her meds from your PCO, she really needs to see a specialist for these kinds of meds. PCP's are great for sore throats, etc, but when it comes to this speciality, they really know very little about it. There are soooooo many medication options out there for depression. Wuick possibly she is not on the correct medication or the correct dosage. As far as weight gain on the medications. I have yet to see a "drug" that will put on weight on a patient. There are some meds that do however, increase ones appitite. These meds have no caloric value to them at all. Only foods can put onweight gain, so I would suspect she is eating things behind your back. You didn't say what meds she was on, so please consult a psychiatrist for treatment, and please do not stop taking any medications she is currently on without checking with the doctor, as several ANTI_DEP meds need to be tritrated down ti avoid negative issues. Best wishes.

they mainly can just make you feel a bit sleepy. sometimes they can cause dizziness or drymouth as well. Usually there are no major side effects involved taking them. If you are still worried, then look up the anti-depressant pills that you are taking on www.drugs.com and it will tell you everything you need to know.

ABC did a 20/20 dude
I saw this girl and she had to take the ER to find out she did not take her anti-depressant for a while and tried to go cold turkey.
She had withdraws and shakes and they had to tapper her back on the anti depressant to get her to calm down.
She and her parents were mad and wanted to sue everybody for not telling them the side effects. The idea is to get back to normal trying the drug. Doctors say they see a change in your mood or behavior but once you are on you are on. Not Cool Man way Not a Cool Trip.

My daughter was on A whopping dose of Zoloft and she started throwing up in the trash can at school and was shaking so bad she could not hold a spoon. The psychiatrist said these were not side effects of the Zoloft. When she got strep throat real bad, I had to take her to the ER because she could not swallow her own spit. The ER doctor told me to cut down her Zoloft twice and then get her off of it. I did exactly what he said and she is no longer on the Zoloft and no longer shaking like a leaf on a tree and throwing up in the trash at school Thank you Dr. Peterson. I think depression is mind over matter. Talk to someone in a 3rd world country who has to struggle to eat every day about depression. or someone who has no home to go to tonite. Too much emphasis is being placed on drugs to fix everything. I learned a lesson from my child.

Different side effects for different ones. The one I am on now can cause insomnia and a certain amount of "restless leg" problems.
Others I tried before made me feel too energized, like I was high on something. Some can make a person feel almost zombie-like.
Check with your doctor. They are supposed to give you a fact sheet at the pharmacy where the prescription is filled.

From Toronto, the 10pt answer,Antidepressants are divided into categories as to what chemicals they stimulate in the brain.Prozac, and paxil, both are ssr reuptake inhibitors,so they allow yer noggin to make endorphins, but what they all have in common, are side effects that can be worse than the original complaint, like depression, suicidal thoughts, and LOSS OF SEX DRIVE!Without being more specific,I can still tell you, that some people have good results, some need them and swear by them.In my exp with mental health,A-z of side effects for most.Additional meds may counter this, but that is like taking a blast of crack,to counter your heroin nod.Contact me to be more specific. In cases like these,I want to give you correct info as possible.
