Swimming lessons. Then you will feel you have helped him in one of the best ways and it's something that he has for the rest of his life.

The savings fund is a great idea, for all the reasons mentioned above. The ono-on-one day together sounds sweet, I would wait another year for that one though. In my personal experience two year olds are temperamental and given to tantrums and wanting their mommy at all hours. If you want to give him something he will enjoy or need right now but don't know what, I would recommend asking his mother. She knows exactly what your nephew has and needs. I usually do that [and they have no problem telling me everything that the kid needs:-)]. If you don't want to ask her i would recommend going on a recon mission. Go to the kid's room and do inventory on what he has. Then you'll know what he is missing and what he likes. At that age anything that is colorful and makes noise is a hoot to them. I never went wrong with a Sesame Street DVD when my sister was 2. (It helped her learn the alphabet, colors and the numbers; she can count to 20 and is only 2.5)
Good Luck being an awesome uncle! You are on you're way â

Books, books, books. Picture books are great for this age and hopefully he is already being read to. You can also get him some of your favorite chapter books that you enjoyed as a child. It doesn't matter that he won't use them until he's older. You are just helping his family build a family library. Some great kids books:
The Napping House by Don & Audrey Wood
Click, Clack, Moo! by Doreen Cronin
If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Joffe-Numeroff
(and others in the series, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, etc.)
He may not get as excited when opening it as he does with toys, but in the long run it'll be one of his favorite presents. Make sure you get to do some of the reading with him!

I would start him a savings account. On all special occasions, instead of buying him more stuff,I would put the money that you were going to spend in the bank. Buy a CD,or some other money market fund that just keeps growing. It doesn't take a lot of money to start this either.

I know the feeling. If you know he likes a certian candy or food, buy that. He'll eat it up and you don't have to worry about him already having it or not thinking it's cool. If you live in another part of the country, buy him something from the area you live in. Last year I bought my niece a Mexican Bingo game ($2) from a local grocery store (I live in AZ) and it was her favorite gift!

If he has lots of stuff, what about something like a savings bond or something. It's not very exciting for a 2 year old I know, but if he gets lots of other stuff, he won't notice. But it sure would be cool for him when he's older.

Why dont you offer to take him out for a daytrip instead of a gift. Kids dont usually remember all the materialistic things they got as children but they do remember special days out and have memories of it for years to come. If not a full day out even just a dinner and a movie or something.... my sister in law does this now with my daughter and they always come home full of laughter....she remembers her special times with her aunt. She will occasionally buy her something small...but she loves all the one on one attention and special time. Good luck.....with your decision..... God Bless ..............Lynne Butler

Take him out for ice cream or Chuck E. Cheese. You can also get him a Savings Bond. They grow and he can use the money however he wants when he is older.
