my bf feeds her breakfast he says "breakfast time". Do you think she wonders why we call her meals two different things? I know you're supposed to be consistent with dogs but does this really matter?

No, it doesn't matter. Your pup doesn't speak English. All she knows is that you're babbling at her and holding food. It's the food she wants, all she's focusing on, so you could say whatever you wanted to her and it wouldn't make a difference.

It's the commands you need to be consistent with, because that is what she focuses on during training. For example, you shouldn't say "sit down" while your bf says "sit."

I once tried a little experiment (after first learning about Pavlov's Dogs) to see what my dog would respond to when it was time to eat. For a long time, I would yell "FOOD" very loudly as I fed him, and he quickly picked up that it was time to be fed. Then, when we were comfortable with that, I started calling "TRASH" when I fed him. He reacted to that pretty quickly as well. Then, for about a week, I would alternate between FOOD and TRASH, and he responded the same for both words.

As for the answer to your question, I think as long as you are consistently using the same two phrases, there really shouldn't be a problem. Your dog knows that she is being fed, and that is the important thing.

I think she has plenty of other stimulation to let her know its mealtime. When my dogs are really hungry, the scooper in my hand is full of odorous food, and I just clanked around filling their water bowl then I've past the point at which different words will have different meanings.

It probably is a little confusing, but not to worry because I've never had to train dogs to "come and get it" or deal with a dog who doesn't obey the food-bowl-filling-routine.

I don't think so, it's night-time for supper and breakfast in the morning, dogs understand routine, it wouldn't really work if you called breakfast supper anyway. I think your dog understands. Most dogs understand both 'outside' and 'walk', either word gets a response.

I don't think that matters when feeding your dog. What you should do though, is when it's feeding time, make her sit every time before you put her food down. Be consistent with that and you wont have any problems with her jumping on you when you are going to feed her.

Look animals don't understand english. You could be talking to your dog in the sweetest voice but swearing up a storm at her & she'll still wag her tail. It doesn't matter as long as your feeding her she's happy.

I think your dog will soon get used to both mealtimes, it's like when you train them they know when to sit when told, give a paw when told, they know walkies, it doesn't matter, he'll understand.
