the screws on the hinge part of the straighners seem very tight and i dont want to brake the straightners as they are ghd's. does anyone know how to loosen these without sending them back to ghd?

There should be a number of screws (in deep holes) They will either be Cross head/triangular or star. If they are cross head, use a positive (cross head + ) screw driver and undo them. Open up the casing of the straighteners VERY carefully so that you don't lose any bits. Have a look at the existing power cord and if you think you can replace the cord easily, by all means have a go. If it looks too complex then leave it and buy a new set.
Good luck whatever you decide but do be very careful :-)

If it is a model ghb 3 1 b just undo the 2 screws at the hinge section after having removed the rubber band around the detachable plate. These should be tight as it houses a 240volt connector. Dont forget safety first and unplug from the mains( before doing this. My questuon to you is where did you manage to get the cable from?

Why bother, if they are under a year old then send them back under the warrenty, If older then throw in the bin they are cheap items , just replace them
