According to my gynecologist, the only certain way to tell if you are in menopause is by a blood test. However, here are the usual symptoms of menopause:

Night sweats, chillblains, hot flashes (those are REALLY fun - NOT!), absence of period.

When you are in perimenopause (early stage), you start to have the first three symptoms but usually still have your period, though it may be slowing down.

Menopause used to be thought of as when the menses stopped. Now doctors know it is a process that lasts several years until a woman no longer has her monthly period. I was very busy with my family and my career was quite demanding and I actually "missed" the fact that my periods had ceased. I only noticed it six months later. Many women have hot flashes when they suddenly feel flushed and hot, especially in the face and upper body. Some cry and are more emotional for awhile. I didn't have any of the usual symptoms. I was glad at 48 to see menopause since I'd had my first period at 9 years of age. It was a walk in the park for me and I've always thought the fact that I was busy I didn't have time to think about it.

About 25 per cent of women do not notice any changes at menopause, except the cessation of periods. Another 50 per cent notice slight physical and/or mental changes. The remaining 25 per cent have inconvenient or even distressing symptoms. Physical symptoms may include hot flashes, sweating, dryness of the vagina (sometimes causing soreness during intercourse), palpitations, joint pains and headaches. Among the non physical symptoms often assiciated with the menopause are depression, anxiety, irriatability, decreased ability to concentrate, lack of confidence and sleeping difficulties. These symptoms may last from a few weeks to more than five years.
