It's not the scriptures that cause bad things to happen. It's a combination of:
People who believe that scriptures are infallible, depite years of translations,
People who play "buffet" with the scriptures, picking a bit from here and a bit from there,
People who take the scriptures as complete truth, without studying the historical meaning/significance of the verse,
People who do not account for societal advances since the writing of the canonical texts and choose to follow the laws verbatim.
And regardless, bad things happen in the world without religion involved.

No disagreement here, as a matter of fact, I find that some people read too much into scriptures...the contextual meaning that is decided upon isn't always an actual portrayal or meaning of what is written.
...and yes, religious scriptures being construed incorrectly are causing many horrible atrocities around the globe constructed by those who believe they understand all and have the personal duty of fulfilling whatever scriptural prophecies they are basing their actions on.
I find it extremely difficult to accept the fact that God would direct, require or accept the horrors taking place today...or that the Bible could predict such things, which of course take place because the Bible says so. Nostradamus gave us a number of quatrains that also predict many things that are taking place today...yet no one follows his words let alone believes them or puts faith in them or him.
Odd.

The people who create the Gutenberg Project are really knowledgeable: they select almost all valuable books and provide them freely to all mankind through the Internet. Up there you can read the Holy Scriptures from the world religions to find out the divine wisdom.
What is the divine wisdom: that is the light of the One True God enabling every pure and humble man to know his own self, his relation to the world and to the One True God, and based on that knowledge he can conduct a happy, useful and progressive life.
Men with sour feeling, men in quarelling groups, please ignore ignorant advices from fallible personalities, and turn to the Holy Scriptures to seek divine wisdom to build a better world for ourselves and for the next generations.

So... where does one draw the line to follow as instructed in the book and when to compromise? In the case of not killing, if people really did follow then wars shouldnt even happen?
