It depends on what state you live in and if it is a special plate you want.
In Wisconsin, a standard issue plate can be personalized for an additional $15 per year in addition to the regular yearly registration fees.
If you wanted a special plate, like the University of Wisconsin plate, it is $15 per year extra + $20 per year to the University.
Do a net search for Department + Transportation + (Your state).
Once you are in your state's D.O.T. web site, click on Drivers and Vehicles, click on license plates, then choose license plate guide.
I hope this helps.

Vanity plates. It must not be something obscene, and must not be something someone else already has. Usually you are allowed 6 or 7 letters/numbers. The cost is set by the legislature of the particular state.

They are called Vanity plates, most states charge about $40.00 extra on top of your regular plate fees. You apply for the vanity name/number and if it isn't obscene or something considered offensive they will send it to you .most states require that you have the reg.plate inside the car and the vanity on your cars bumper . Good luck
