I've often heard that pain is a cleanser. Can inflicting pain on one's self truly be a spiritual experience?

I feel it necessary to add the fact that I'm not talking about inflicting the kind of pain that causes permanent damage (cutting, mutilation etc.) I'm referring to things like a cilice http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cilice.

It depends in what context pain is used .I happen to disagree with the whole 'pain is a cleanser' philosophy.I find that Tide To Go is much more effective. However, when the amount of physical pain is equal to or more than the amount of spiritual pain a person in, it can be a good thing.Unfortunately, that often leads to suicide. Now if your addressing issues such as flagellation, or crucifying ones self, and so on, it's the same principle as the Native American rite of the Sun Dance. It is done to seek a vision.Your thoughts are all ready predisposed to receive 'a message' from ones 'higher power' and when the body has had enough, the mind willingly concocts 'the vision' to relieve the physical pain.

If you are considering inflicting pain upon yourself or others than I suggest you go to a therapist. Pain is not spiritual though some cultures work themselves into frenzy and than do painful rituals to appease their God(s) (if there are any). It's not necessary to endure pain to be spiritual. PEACE!

I hope this is open question to all. As a muslim, i believe, that inflicting pain on ur body isnt cleansing uself, cuz our body belongs to God, and we're returning it to him when we die. Its liek renting something, when u give it back , u haveto give it back in perfect shape. Repenting for ur sins is cleansing. Repenting with a true heart is the way ofcleansing.

I'm sorry, I kow it's cliche. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Pain is also your body telling you that your're still alive.
