I've heard people say that gays shouldn't be allowed because they'll make moves on their fellow soldiers/sailors, or they don't want to confined to a small area, like a ship, for months a time with a gay person. But really think about this, it seems to me that if you're gay and in the Military and you're on a ship or living in a tent in Iraq for months a time with a bunch of other men, knowing that many of these men dislike gay people and defiantly dislike them being in the Military, the last thing you would want to do is draw attention to yourself by hitting on one of your straight shipmates/soldiers! So I don't understand people fearing that a gay person will try anything on anyone! And furthermore, most gay people don't go around hitting on straight people! It would be the same as a straight person hitting on someone gay!
What's funny is that I'm willing to bet there are a lot of gay people that are in the Military, and these people with these irrational fears don't even know it! That's right, he could be taking a shower right next to you and you wouldn't even know he was gay!
I have had this conversation many times with my Military husband before, and he says that just because someone is gay, it doesn't make them any weaker to fight a war, or any less capable of fighting for their country, and as long as they are doing their job, he could care less what they do in their personal life.
It's actually a shame that someone who could be an outstanding member of the Armed Forces and really do good for our country, may never join the Military out of fear of what might happen to them if someone finds out their sexual preference.

The argument against is that many people in the military are still uncomfortable (prejudiced) with the idea of gays.

So, the presence of known gays is disruptive. And you know what, they're right. As long as prejudice exists, the presence of anyone on the receiving end of that bigotry will be disruptive.

Just like the presence of mixed-race units was disruptive. But the military got over it, and today the concept of racially segregated units wouldn't occur to anyone (at least, nobody would get away with it).

It's really sad that so many people think homosexuals can't keep their hands to themselves. Because obviously statistics have shown that it's impossible for men and women to serve on a military base together without non-consensual sex occurring constantly.

Honestly I have no idea.. But usually the military personnel come from mostly conservative families. They might be uncomfortable with it, or sharing the bathroom with gay people might be uncomforting for some people. Again, we got over the race issue in the past, its time to get over the gay issue.

There isn't a problem. America is basically the only western country without gays in the military, even Israel allows it.

america in general is extemely homophobic. if you consider who the military is mainly comprised of, low-to-middle class country boys and girls, their views on homosexuality are extremely biased and negative. asking them to fight alongside a gay person is like asking them to make nice with those insurgents and just give them a free pass. not gonna happen. it' IS a distraction for them and will cause problems out in the field.

Because in the foxhole under fire you need to be able to trust the person next to you with your life. You can't be worrying about getting their infected blood all over ya and getting AIDS.
