To look at it from the standpoint of the original $30. Each man has $1.
The bellhop has $2.
The hotel clerk has $25.
Total
$1 x 3 = $3
2
25
$30

there is no missing dollar. the trick is that people do all of the math at the wrong time. Most people do all the math at the end.
See watch if you do it at the end you get $29.00, like this. now the three of them only paid $9.00 each.
heres the problem. the 3 of them paid a tolal of $27.00
ok they paid $27.00 the bellhop put $2.00 in his pocket. that is 29.00
If you do it write you get 30.00. They all paid 10 dollars. the guy over charged them 5 dollars. So all together they paid 25.00 so 25 plus 5 is 30 dollars

The first person answering the question stated that the men paid twenty-five dollars for their rooms. The three men each paid nine dollars each for a total of $27.00. They paid a total of $25.00 for their rooms, in addition to which the bellhop tipped himself $2.00: $25.00 + $2.00= $27.00. This riddle has been around for a long time as evidenced by the men staying in a hotel w/ a bellhop for about $8.33/ room/ night.

Nowhere. You were tricky with your wording! They paid $27 for the room (including $2 to bellhop). They have the 3 extra dollars between them.

okay why would you say they paid 9 each? because the hotel price was only 25 dollars
so they have 25 to the hotel 2 to the bellhop and 3 to the guests
25+2+3=30
and this is really really really old ♥

No no no. Okay, the two dollars in his pocket are still technically in the $27 they are paying. The three $1 bills plus the $27 equals $30. That is a trick question, because it leads you to believe 27 + 2 should give you your answer.

If they gave $30 to start off the bell hop takes gets $5 to give back he takes $2 then they payed $28 dollars all together - not $27 because the $3 dollars was given back.
In essence there is no "other" dollar
