Retardation occurs for several reasons. Sometimes it is present at birth, for example, fragile X. Other times, it happens due to accidents such as oxygen deprivation during birth. Sometimes parents who have retardation will have children who have average or above average intellectual functioning.
A note on retardation...many of the posters assume that a person with retardation has to be extremely low functioning...not true! It might mean requiring a longer time to process information and make decisions, but people with retardation are capable of succeeding in many areas and accomplishing many things. Please do not stereotype or make assumptions or act surprised because a person with an intellectual disability communicates well.

It depends. Retardation can be genetic or behavioral. It can also be caused by childhood injury or disease.
If you're talking about Downs syndrome, the answer is probably not. Downs syndrome is caused by a chromosome mutation and is not directly heritable. A woman with Downs syndrom has no more or less chance of having a child with the condition than any other woman.
As a side note, the chances of having a child with DS increases to 50% after a woman reaches age 35.

Unless their condition is genetic NO they will not have mentally challenged children. The word retarded is a very cruel and insulting word.
And NO they will not teach their children to be mentally challenged either.
There are all levels of being mentally challenged. And if they are able to take care of themselves and live on their own then that is great.
I do not think however that severely mentally challenged individuals should have children. They do not have the mental capacity to take care of them.
And if "you" were diagnosed as being mentally challenged at 3 yrs of age......you have done a remarkable job of over coming your condition evidentally because you posted a question that made complete sense and you spelled your words correctly.
Your mental capacity seems to be at a higher level.
Have you been tested lately? To see what your IQ is? Go and take one and find out if you are actually considered as being mentally challenged. If you are the same person who typed this question and you are the one saying you are mentally challenged.....I would seriously go take the test because I believe that you can test high enough NOT to be considered legally mentally challenged.
Good luck to you.

Is your "mental retardation" caused by genetics or environmental? First things first, do you want children? A question you aren't old enough to deal with yet, but an important issue to deal with first. Never mind your future spouse, you are the one who will be responsible for the child.
If or when you want children, you and your mate should consult a geneticist to evaluate your chances for a "normal" child.
Just remember, life is full of suprises!

There's a chance. Sometimes depending on the condition (eg autism) you may be able to get tested at a hospital for the risk.
