You should send a thank you card within a few weeks of the shower. Thank them for attending as well as the gift.

Send the cards as soon a possible. Include in the card a note personally written by you, thanking the giver for the gift -- maybe even saying how the gift will be used. Also, thank them for coming to to the shower. :)
