Ok, I will try to answer ALL of your questions because I want the 10 points!
I teach 2nd grade...
We go back August 23rd and get out at the end of May. My whole district goes back that day. Preschool-12th grade. Well, actually preschool and kindergarten phase in so there aren't so many kids in the class the first week. That way the teacher can introduce them to the concept of school without having all 25 kids there at once. like, 8 will go one day, 8 will go the next, and 8 will go the next, and then the following week, all 24 students will be there together. It works well for little ones.
No, not all school start the same day. Some do, but not all.
Some schools are year round, but that is only a few. They get a couple weeks off in between quarters.
Schools here are divided up among all 50 states, under that states educational system. Then we have counties in each state, then down to cities and towns. Each school system is governed by a board of education, voted by community at elections, and they are over the superintendent of schools, who is over principals, who are over teachers, who are over students. It's like a little government. So, each school system is different in what they do, but have to follow standards set forth by the state they are in.
Some schools went back over the past 2 weeks and get out earlier in may. Some don't go back until September and get out in June. It just depends on the school district.
We have quarters at my school. we have 4 terms of 9 weeks each. We get off at Christmas/New Years from about Dec. 18th until Jan. 3 or 4th usually. About 2 weeks of school off. Some schools do not have a Spring Break, they get off Good Friday and the Monday after Easter. That is so they get out earlier in May. My school has one week off in the Spring, sometimes around easter, sometimes not. We change our school calendar every year and the teachers vote for which set up they like best, then we adopt the calendar that had the most votes.
We get other days off to for conferences, teacher work days and meetings, Thanksgiving, Columbus Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, etc. We have to be in school for at least 180 days or so. We get almost 3 months off during the summer, with 9 months of school.
Homecoming is an annual event, usually during football season, where returning graduates come to the game to watch. (Hence the name, as if they were coming home for a visit.) That is an old tradition. They just have Homecoming no matter if alumni are going or not. They get hyped up for the big game on Friday night in the fall, then Saturday night they have a school dance, where a king and queen are crowned. Some schools have a fall and winter homecoming. The winter one is during basketball season.
It's kind of like prom, but with sports involved also.
Ok, I deserve 10 points for that!!!

depends on where in america you live. Schools start at different times even within the same state. Usually schools begin at the middle to end of august and go thru 2 semesters ending toward to end of June.
School does not start or end on the same day
Homecomming is when 2 rival schools play football against each other. That game is usually a big deal, and is celebrated with a dance,.. and thus naming a King and Queen of Home Comming.. just a highschool dance/football game tradition. (by the way it's american football)
There is typically a spring break during March or April that is 10 days or so out of school, there is the Christmas or Winter break that is usually 10-14 days out of school, other than that just a day or two here and there for parent teacher conferences

School starts on a different day for most people based on the county they live in (if you're not familiar with counties, they're like states within a state). Generally speaking, the public schools( in a given county) will all start on the same day, but the private schools may not. Also, every college starts on a different day. Some schools even go year round. Most of us, however, are still on break and will start sometime this month. Most schools use either a quarterly or semester system. Everyone gets a week or two off for "winter break" (Christmas) and we usually get off a couple days for Thanksgiving.
Homecoming is kind of like prom, only not as fancy. It's a big dance and it's timing has something to do with American football and either the first or the last game of the season.

School starts back next week in most of the US. Each district has their own schedule, but all schools within that district start the same day (meaning all ages). Normally a school year is from mid August until mid May (summer is from May to August).
College has semesters, Fall, Summer and Spring. Elementary, Middle and High schools have school years.......and then a summer.
Breaks:
Spring Break is in March for one week
Christmas Break is about 2 weeks at the end of December, school starts back after the New Year
Thanksgiving Break is mid to late November
and then there are other holidays throughout the year
Homecoming is an American football thing. When celebrated by schools, the activities vary widely. However, they usually consist of a football game played on the school's home football field, activities for students and alumni, a parade featuring the school's marching band, and the coronation of a Homecoming Queen (and at many schools, a Homecoming King).
Hope I helped!!!

Start time for school depends on area. Some area like where we live just started back this week.
Pre-college education typically runs on Quarters. Take the amount of time you will be in school and cut the time into 4 equal parts.
Typical breaks are:
Short break around the American holiday Thanksgiving
Longer break around the Christmas holiday but to be politically correct it is now tipically called Winter break.
And then Spring Break.
Homecoming has to do with scheduling a school dance around the time of the last home game of a American Football season. The game is played sometimes on your field sometimes on the other schools so when it is getting close to the end of the season for the sport they schedule a dance at the same time and since the game is going to be played on your field it's called Homecoming because the team is playing on their home field.
Fun question, cheers.

Are you asking about high school or college? I am a teacher at a middle school in New York City. These dates are different in different communities. Our schools are divided up into districts and it is up to the superintendent of the district to determine things like the school calendar.
Students are starting at my middle school on September 5th and will be in school through the third week in June. Our school year is divided up into semesters, with mid-term exams after the first nine weeks and a final at the end of each semester. We get school days off for:
a half week for Thanksgiving the third week of November,
a week for the Winter Holidays at the end of December,
a week for various national holidays in the beginning of February, and a week in the middle of April which is called spring break but is actually for the celebration of Easter or Passover.
We also get a few days off here and there for important things such as Yom Kippur and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
The Homecoming celebration for high schools and colleges center around the last football game that is played at the school (the last "home" game). It is just an autumn celebration in which school spirit is emphasized. It involves the electing of a homecoming queen, pep rallies, a homecoming dance, etc. It is all very outdated stuff, but it goes on at almost every high school and college around the country, nonetheless.
Hope all this helps! :)

The school year varies from state to state, and district by district. The traditional achool year begins in mid to late August and goes until late May, mid-June, again depending on what state you are in. Some schools are on semesters and some trimesters. It just varies. However, some school districts go year round, meaning they go to school all year around, but they have weeks off here and there. For example, some go for three monhs, and are off one, etc....
Homecoming is a traditional football game held once per year. At this game, all alumni come back, or come "home" to celebrate. Usually prior to the game there is a big parade with floats, and a dance afterwards, or the next night. The school also names a King and Queen of the dance. It's a big deal.
