So..which translation is correct? Is it thous shall not kill? or Thou shall not murder? Two very different words with different meanings
Iguess it is interpretted with an assumption that it means human life, Furthermore, so far most replies have been "adding on" or reinterpreting what has been said. The NIV bible that I read ( not Christian but I love the wisdom within book of proverbs, 31 proverbs one for everyday ) says thou shall not kill. Anything else would be "changing" the bible's original message.
I guess we cannot fully comprehend that commandment without reinterpretation, but it still doesnt say thou shall not kill, but animals and other creatures is ok. If god wanted to say that, he would have just said it, why leave open ends for mortals to "guess upon"?
I think Thou Shall not kill entails not phyiscally killing another beings, not mentally wishing for the death of another, no verbally deadening the heart of another, animal of otherwise.

First of all, "Thou shal not kill" is not the first commandment. That would be "Thou shall have no other gods before me."
Second, you cannot take one verse and make an assumption like that without studying other Scriptures. God Himself killed the first animal to make coats for Adam and Eve when they sinned(Genesis 3:21). He gave the Israelites a list of animals that they could and couln't eat (Leviticus 11). The way that the Israelites would atone for their sins was by the shedding of blood from animals (Exodus, Leviticus). There is mention after mention of instances where animals were killed without it being a negative thing.

Properly translated, the phrase is: You shall not murder.
Killing in self defense, a just war, and under certain circumstances, lawful capital punishment are not considered murder.
However many Christians including Catholics believe most modern governments no longer need to use capital punishment to protect society from criminals.
With love in Christ.

Commandment number one
Though shall have no other Gods before me.
Anything you put in front of GOD would be another God.
If you choose to not go to church because you were on vacation in another state or town, you are putting your vacation or relaxation in front of God and therefore making your vacation more important than GOD. Not saying you have to find a church in your area that you were vacationing in, just that you would have to take the time out of your vacation and worship and glorify GOD.
If you went to a sports game on a day that you would normally put aside for God, that would make that game more important than GOD. That game would become your GOD for that day at least, and this is not allowed.
Keep time set aside for GOD just that, set aside for GOD. Let nothing keep you from it. Do not let lusts or greed become your Gods. If money and career are more important than worshipping GOD, you have broken the first commandment.

Thou shall not kill ***innocent** human life.
But also be a steward of earth and its resources. Do not cause unnecessary harm or pain to animals.
Cordially,

First of all, the first commandment is "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me."
But the verse you're referring to says "You shall not murder." Murder refers to a human. God has said many times that we can eat meat - animals - as long as it's "clean" meat - not pork, shellfish, etc.

Actually the first commandment God gave to man(woman) was to multiply and replenish(fill) the Earth.
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
(Old Testament | Genesis 1:27 - 28)
In other words: have children. I included the other verses to keep things in context.
If you are talking about the first commandment given in the famous ten commandments that would be: Thou shalt have no other gods before me.(Old Testament | Exodus 20:3)
If you interpret the Scriptures in the way you have stated you haven't read and understood the scriptures as you ought to have. You have taken them out of context completely for your own convenience, which you are perfectly entitled to do. After all nearly every religion does it and many people do it to justify being foolish and to act in a way contrary to the nature of God and his laws.
I recommend you read, think about what you have read and take it to God in honest prayer to find out what it means rather than consulting popular opinion.
Thank you for the question.
P.S. God is at liberty to negate any commandment given to us for His purposes if He so commands.(i.e. Abraham commanded to sacrifice his only son Isaac among many other examples found in the scriptures)
If you have nay other questions you would like to ask me please write.

thou shall not kill HUMANS> humans are sacred since we are made in the image and likeness of God and also baptized christains serve as the temple of the holy spirit. so we are to be respected since we "represent" or "rule" over God in his behalf until he returns> animals are okay to eat since everything god made is "good", therefore we are able to eat meat>

It means:
You will not murder.
To take life of another person by anger, or gain.
To kill by accident, or self defense or war does not break this commandment
