If you have 2 GB of RAM, you probably don't need a page file. Oftentimes, the RAM installed on a computer is not enough. So, Windows XP converts some of the hard drive space to act like memory, virtual memory. However, virtual memory is much slower than RAM. In your case, if you have a page file then Windows XP might store information on the page file instead of using RAM, which is ashame because it would cause a drop in speed. By not setting a page file, Windows XP is forced to use RAM, which is a lot faster. However, there are occasions in which a computer should have a page file even with 2 GB RAM installed. For example, it is good for gamers or applications which require a hugh amount of computer resources (e.g. CAD).

1.75 X your ram size.
1gig ram = 1.75gig pagefile size.
